UNIT TWO SUMMARY Chapter 7 Summary Governments have a stake in the good health of their citizens therefore they have developed several different sets of nutritional guidelines and recommendations The Dietary Reference Intakes DRIs are designed to promote optimal health and prevent both nutritional deficiencies and chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disease They include four sets of guidelines the Estimated Average Requirement EAR the Recommended Dietary Allowances RDAs the Adequate Intake AI and the Tolerable Upper Intake Level UL The Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range AMDR represent intake levels of essential nutrients that provide adequate nutrition and that are associated with reduced risk of chronic disease The Dietary Guidelines forAmericans provides diet and exercise recommendations designed to promote health and reduce the risk of chronic disease MyPyramid is a graphic nutritional tool based on the Dietary Guidelines that can be customized to individual calorie needs The Daily Values used on food labels indicate how a particular food contributes to the recommended daily intake of major nutrients in a 2000calorie diet Essential nutrients are nutrients the body cannot manufacture and must get from foods or supplements The macronutrients include water carbohydrates protein and fats The micronutrients are minerals and vitamins The body needs water to digest absorb and transport nutrients maintain proper uid balance in the cells and tissues regulate body temperature and perform
