Weekly Notes 2/26/2016 Professor Matthews The moon and Mercury are twins in appearance Mercury: -scarping: a shrinking phenomenon (like when a pug has too much skin) -surface is highly cratered -Caloris basin -has a small atmosphere due to it’s proximity to the sun Venus: -same escape velocity as earth -much ccloser to the sun -very thick atmosphere, little escape of gases -surface temperature: 730K (much hitter than mercury) - this is hot enough for metals to be molten -Has two continents -Reconstructed images by computers show the following features: -Top: Lava domes -Shield Volcanoes (look like roman shields- circular and slightly lifted) -formed by: slow upward movement of magma from the mantle -coronae -impact craters Mars: -Has north and south polar icecaps ( made primarily of frozen CO2) (water on mars is permanently frozen) -shifting dust cover makes surface of mars look like its changing -frequent dust storms, with high winds -Tharsis Bulge: -Size of North America, approx.. 10km in elevation -points with Minimal cratering indicates youngest part of surface -Valles Marineris: -Formed by crustal force -is a rift valley -Northern hemisphere of mars is younger because of cratering -Olympus Mons: -Volcano on mars the size of Colorado -Much of the northern hemisphere may have been an ocean
