Class notes 3/14/16 Important dates:  th March 24  First day of Persuasive Speech 1(Group C starts)  March 31  Class Canceled  April 5  Group B will present their persuasive speech 1 What is left to do in this class Persuasive speech 1  Impromptu  Persuasive speech 2 Quiz on persuasion (Chapters 16 and 17)  Final  Notes on persuasive speech  A survey is required for a persuasive speech; this will be used as one of your sources.  6 sources will be required  A Visual Aid is not required  Every one will have a Q and A at the end of their speeches; make sure you are ready to answer all questions.  The topic must be relevant to the audience.  Choose a controversial topic For the survey:  There are 3 ways to present a survey  1. Fixed alternative Ex: Do you smoke:  Yes__ or No__ 2. Scale question  Ex: On a scale of 1 through 10 (1 being less important and 10 very important)….     3. Open ended question  Ex: “What should NKU do…”  You let them express themselves, this takes longer to complete.  Ways to organize speech:  Lets say the speech is on having a NKU football team Topical:  I. NKU would benefit from it economically                   II. Enhance Degree                  III. Spirit                   IV. Image  Problem Solution:  Problem: We don’t have a football team                                       Solution:  raise money to fund a football team, give reasons why we                                                           should have a football team Problem/Cause/Solution: Problem­ Do not have a football team   Causes­ Lacking Funds Solution­ Getting people to raise money, sensitize people on why                                                                      A football team is important  Comparative Advantages: Gas fueled cars vs. electric cars                                                      Give reasons why Electric Cars are better                                                       Ex: save money,  no more paying gas, no more pollution … Motivated Sequence (Found on p22 coursebook)                                      Ex: I. Attention Step     II. Need Step (Showing the problem)   III. Satisfaction step (Solving the problem)    IV. Visualization Step (Giving the ultimate outcome if problem solved)    V. Action step (Immediate one (ex: sign a petition)
