Tuesday September 1 2015 Sweatshops and Exploitations Are sweatshops immoral If so why Companies will stop producing products themselves they will design the tshirt and will send it to an out of country shop The shop will have their employees make the product for very cheap and in very poor circumstances The Home Country Standard If you wouldn39t do it in the US then don t do it somewhere else The Living Wage Standard Corporations should pay a living wage to their overseas workers they should pay enough and give the workers enough time off so they cannily with dignity The Would We Be OK With It Standard If our country was economically like the country that has the sweatshop would we be ok with sweatshops The Classical Standards The working conditions must be freely chosen by informed workers Reasons People Give For Not Allowing Sweatshops Starvation and slave wages Makes countries and employees worse off widening gap between rich and poor The they are better off argument 1 Many sweatshops employees take their job voluntarily and are better off than they would deb without those jobs 2 if 1 then sweatshops are morally permissible 3 So sweatshops are morally permissable The Economy gets better argument 1 Countries that have sweatshop end up with better economies and higher wages for workers Tuesday September 1 2015 2 if 1 then sweatshops are morally permissible 3 so sweatshops are morally permissible Exploitation The offer you cant refuse theory a exploits B if and only if A extracts excessive benefits from B by means of an offer that B cannot refuse Can t refuse Someone has an offer he cant refuse just incase 1 there is a monopoly and 2 there is urgent need Excessive benefits benefits that are above what we would expect someone to receive if they were transacting with someone who was rational informed and could refuse the offer ex Anne has an antidote ben needs or he will die she exploits him AWrongful ExploitationA The Vending Machine argument 1 Anne does not exploit Ben in Vending 2 But if the offer you cant refuse theory is true then Anne did not exploit ben in vending 3 So the offer you cant refuse theory isn39t true The life Argument 1 Anne exploits ben in Life 2 But if the offer you cant refuse theory is true then Anne didn39t exploit ben in life 3 So the offer you cant refuse theory isn39t true Life Anne doesn39t offer to give ben the antidote in exchange for one million instead she just offers to save his life Tuesday September 1 2015 The penny Argument 1 The worlds best doctor doesn39t exploit the worlds richest person in Penny 2 but if the offer you cant refuse theory is true then she did exploit him 3 so the offer you cant refuse theory isn39t true
