Age of Ideology, III: Socialism Utopian Socialism: Group of thinkers who propose the perfect industrial world, this idea was very strong in France. Saint Simon orders a complete reorder of society, he believed intellectuals should be at the top of the social class, then the Captains of Industry, and then the Workers. Charles Fourier wanted a series of separate communities called Phalanx. These Phalanxes are all autonomous, no government, and the economy runs itself. o “From each according to his ability, from each according to his need” – this was the guiding Robert Owen, an industrialist, transformed an industrial town buy cleaning up factories, and sending kids to school all at the same time. Marxism: Dialectical Materialism or Scientific Socialism Early life of Karl Marx o German NOT Russian o Born into a middle class German family, superbly educated and wanted to become a History Professor. Instead he worked at a newspaper company. Begins to write his ideas in this newspaper and he ends up getting ran out of Germany to France where he meets Friederich Engels. o Engels and Marx become good friends and Engels gave Marx an inside look of what happened at factories. o Marx and Engels end up getting ran out of France to Brussels. Here they meet up with some other radicals and here they came up with the Communist Manifesto. o Because of the Communist Manifesto they then have to leave Brussels, Marx goes to London where he lives the rest of his life. This is also where he wrote Das Kapital. Theory of History o Hegel, a German philosopher, developed a theory of history known as the dialectic theory of history. His thesis is if you are given any given civilization in any given time will be shaped by this dominant culture. As time goes on the culture starts to become the opposite of what it was, this is known as the antithesis. Then comes the synthesis, the new dominant culture that will after time go through this cycle once again. Dialectic is the advancement in history through clashing. Clash and move forward. o Marx is a materialist because he believes that humans are materialistic Substructure vs Superstructure Capitalism as theft o Introduces this idea in Das Kapital. o Labor Theory of Value – What makes the value of the product is the labor that went into it creating its product. o Shared this idea with Ricardo 2 o He views capitalism as theft because workers are not being compensated by the value of the goods they are providing. So he believes a revolution is inevitable Revolution by Proletariat o He believes that there will be a clash between the working class and the proletariats.
