Lecture 013: Ancient Greece 9/22/15 Solon (d. 560 BCE) o Forbade debt slavery o Created jobs so people could find work o Divided Athens into 4 classes based on wealth o Step towards democracy o Reformed laws (made the punishments fit the crime) Cleisthenes (d. 508) o Used “deme” or locality to define citizenship o Isonomia: the principle of equal rights for all citizens Pericles (d. 429 BCE) o Leader of Athens o Made the Athenian Navy very strong o Popular politic o Everyone was in uproar that Pericles allowed her to kiss him on the cheek in public. People believed this meant she had more power than Pericles. Sparta: o Were the special forces of their time o Not a volunteer army, male aristocrats fought in wars o Belonged to the social class of Helot’s.
