Kiera Elmer Brother Tippetts The Eternal Family 10102015 Brethren We Have a Work to Do 1 Describe the disintegration between balance and importance of males and females in the world today There used to be inequality in the terms of men being stronger and superior to women Now in the effort to rebalance that inequality the women are rising above the men and everything is reversed Yes it is important to know that women are just as significant in uential and important as men but they are not superior The essential roles of men and women are being pushed aside and careers and materialistic gain is becoming the most important thing Women are starting to believe that they don t need a man to achieve this kind of success and that having a family with a father or one at all is completely unnecessary 2 Brethren we have a work to do Describe what work Elder Christofferson is referring to Various goals and achievements are expected in this work Elder Christofferson wants men to break out of this stereotypical stigma that men are selfabsorbed immature incompetent and unsuccessful He is calling for them to rise up and be men like Heavenly Father has designed them to be Men are to do well in school and in college and learn as much as they can When they learn to do something they are to be proficient so they may properly support their family and community They are to raise their children in love and righteousness and be an example to them of how hard work and sacrifice pays off They have a work to be the best they can be not to be lazy and idle and in doing only the bare minimum to care for themselves They are to answer to Nephi s call to Arise from the dust my sons and be men 2 Nephi 121 3 In paragraph 9 why does he say men must prepare rather than just be Our purpose in this life is to prepare to meet God not just to meet him Everything in this life is meant to prepare us for the life after this one Our nature does not allow us just to be whatever we desire at that moment We are here to learn grow and strengthen our values and testimonies Everything is going to take work sacrifice and dedication to prove to our Heavenly Father that we are willing to obey We cannot just be we can only prepare to be Let us Be Men 1 How can someone of an older age still not really be a man Being a man does not mean that you can grow facial hair and wear bigger shoes Being a man is defined by who you are on the inside A man would put his desires aside and sacrifice for the best for his family A man knows who he is and what his role is on this earth and strives to honestly work towards and achieve it In 2 Nephi 121 Lehi counsels his sons and all men to Arise from the dust my sons and be men Laman and Lemuel may have been men physically but were not spiritually or characteristically They were murmurers idle and lazy prideful violent and not interested in spiritual things Being a man spiritually would require having all the opposite characteristics 2 True manhood is defined in our relationship to women Why is that The girl you marry will take a terrible chance on you you will largely determine the remainder of her life If men treat women poorly neglect them are rude disrespectful and feel higher than women they have not reached manhood Men realize the special nature of women and their divine purpose here on earth They realize that they cannot progress to live with Heavenly Father unless they have a woman by their side When guys put their family first in that of their wife s needs their children s needs and financial and material needs only then are they on their way to becoming men 3 Behold the man Christ is the highest ideal of manhood What are some of His characteristics that are factors of ideal man hood Christ is exactly who we as men and women want to be like He had an eternal identity just as we did He was a man before he came here to earth was born with the qualities capacities and attitudes of a man and lived like the most ideal righteous man anyone could hope to be Men would be wise to try to live their life in exactness according to the way He lived 3 Nephi 2727 is Christs answer unto his disciples when they asked what manner of men they should be Verily I say unto you even as I am First he completely overcame the natural man He did nothing save it be what the Father asked of him He was tempted and tried but only wanted to do what the Lord required of him This kind of humility is admirable and needed in manhood He was constantly serving his fellow man and exercising his priesthood to bless those who needed it He healed the sick raised the dead gave sight to the blind strength to the weak caused the deaf to hear and the lame to walk He not only healed people physically but spiritually as well Most importantly he gave his life as the eternal sacrifice so we may live with our Heavenly Father again Men realize the importance of their priesthood power and humbly exercise it to bless others and draw them nearer to the savior and his infinite atonement For Time and All Eternity 1 Many churches believe that men are superior or given more ability because Eve tempted Adam to sin Elder Packer says She should be praised for her decision Then Adam fell that men might be Why do we believe she should when many believe she was a sinner We believe that Eve was the one who told Adam about the forbidden fruit but we believe she had a good reason In the garden Adam and Eve lived in complete ignorance of good and evil happiness and sadness and achievements and failures Eve knew that if they were to progress to have families and become like God they had to disobey the Lord and partake of the forbidden fruit This was all a part of the Lord s plan and was a righteous desire of Adam and Eve She didn t partake of the fruit to spite God but because she loved him so much and wanted to carry out his plan Eve understood the importance of her calling and was willing to do what it took to carry it out After the transgression Adam fell that men might be that men are that they might have joy 2 Nephi 225 2 A Man who holds the priesthood does not have an advantage over a woman in qualifying for exaltation Why is this We have learned that salvation is individual and exaltation is familial Men are designed to hold the priesthood and exercise the power of God Women are not left behind because of this blessing Men and women are to progress towards eternal life together as equals In order to qualify for exaltation you must be married Therefore women are not more capable then men nor men more capable then women They need each other to qualify for exaltation 3 Explain the symbolism in President Packer s parable The first key that the man held was the priesthood He had the keys to enter certain areas and have certain authority in the church Because of his righteousness and worthiness to hold his priesthood keys he could enter certain kingdoms of Heaven The safe on the inside of his vault was the abundant blessings of eternal marriage Many would try to steal or corrupt this safe but if he protected it and used it to serve others it would always be compensated His second key was his covenant in eternal marriage and the woman s key was for the second lock He had a rightful inheritance to the blessings of eternal marriage but could not obtain them unless he was married for eternity He needed the woman to open the safe Together if they protected it could partake of the blessings He with his two keys protected the vault and she protected the safe Both roles were equally important in maintaining their marriage His priesthood provided over the family and she nurtured what was within it Any attempt to reshape keys of men and women to fit were futile 1 man and 1 woman is required Mormons and Gays 1 If we want to understand one another we have to see ourselves in one another Explain this quote in terms of Mormons and gays Homosexuality is something that is extremely difficult to understand unless we have experienced it for ourselves It is so easy to look at someone who is so far off of a part of what we believe and judge them for it Isn t there something about you that is off the course of Heavenly Father We all sin struggle and have trials It is essential to see that side of ourselves in gays as well To understand the struggle these sons and daughters of Heavenly Father then we must see our struggles in them Maybe their struggle of sexuality is to your struggle of honesty pornography chastity word of wisdom honoring parents etc Doing this will bring a greater capacity to love and support these individuals in their life long challenges just as you will need support as well 2 The church says that the attraction a homosexual has to one of the same gender is not a sin but acting upon the attraction is Why is this It is important here just as in the first question to think of same gender attraction as another trial and temptation Just as we have thoughts to do certain things that would break commandments offend god and draw the spirit from you These consequences don t happen unless we either do the action or dwell unrighteously on the thought Temptations may be brought to memory occasionally but as we actively try to take our minds off of those temptations then we will be blessed for our righteous efforts When we hold onto those thoughts for too long then we are committing the sins in our minds When we do the action we are physically committing the sin The same is for same sex attraction When the attraction is there it is a temptation When they actively use the atonement to overcome the temptation they are blessed When they unrighteously dwell on or act upon the attraction then they have sinned 3 Explain the slice analogy as described by Greg in relation to his two homosexual children Imagine that every person is made up of their own pizza or pie and each slice represents a piece of their personality or talents Greg explained that your sexuality is only a small slice of the entire pie not a huge piece There are so many other qualities that define a person other then who they like and don t like You don t walk up to someone and say Hi my name is Kiera and I m a heterosexual That just isn t how it works We especially as members of the church need to stop labeling and stigmatizing individuals who say they are homosexual They are probably more like you then they think They have favorite colors foods thoughts and feelings fears family hobbies etc that makes up your pie as well
