The exam will have two sections The rst part will be a multiple choice section similar to the midterm that will review the topics we have read and discussed since then in many ways it is a second midterm The second part is an essay section that is designed to test your ability to integrate the topics covered throughout the semester Six six percent of the nal exam grade will come from the multiple choice section and thi four percent will come from the essays 1 Topics to be covered on the multiple choice section To help facilitate your review we have generated the following list of the elections and democracies What are some of the bad 2 Comprehensive section The essay section will consist of three of the following questions You will then be asked to answer two of them Answers will be graded on their content organizational structure and overall coherence You will also be expected to be able to reference speci c theories from class by name and to know the major author associated with them Rememberthis is an examwe are in part testing you on your ability to remember and apply speci c political science theories so you need to know theories and authors by last name One ofthe big problems I have seen in the past is that students write too little on their essay exams Each ofthe two questions you answer is worth 7500 ofyour nal grade for the class one should not expect that a couple of quick paragraphs will be suf cient for that large ofa portion of your grade Equot I would plan to write for about 20 30 minutes on each essay In class we considered various factors that explain why some countries are democratic and others are not Speci cally we discussed the role of economic development the political culture institutions levels of social capital the reliance of the economy on natural resources and the in uence of international actors eg the United States the Catholic Church the global economy For this question 1 describe the logic behind each of these theories and 2 describe the strengths and weaknesses of each theory What factors does Skocpol argue are necessary for successful revolutions to occur Provide examples from France China and the Eastern Block in 1989 to illustrate your argument Then explain again using examples from these three countries and explicit theories discussed in class why successful revolutions that succeed in overthrowing the old power do not necessarily lead to democracy In class we have focused on elections and democracy as procedures that have both good and bad outcomes Based on this discussion is electoral democracy something worth having To answer this question please include the following pieces of information a What are three of the good outcomes associated with elections and democratic procedures Why does democracy lead to these good outcomes b What are two of the bad outcomes associated with elections and democracy Why does democracy lead to these bad outcomes c Provide speci c examples from the countries we have discussed in class and the readings to illustrate these arguments 4 At various points of class we discussed the dif culty of achieving good govemancea strong rule of law preventing civil wars or ethnic con ict reducing corruption preventing terrorism and generating a strong economy and ghting poverty What factors best eXplain why some countries do better at these types of tasks than others do In other words why do some countries have problems with lawlessness violence or poverty while other countries do not Remember to cite speci c theories discussed in class
