Toni Morrison Huckleberry Fin- adult black man subject to authority of white child. Ellison’s article about Erving Howe- focused on how to read Huckleberry Fin ( how black people read it) sophistication of reading Faulkner goes out window Primitivism- Dominic Dicks interested in rap music doesn’t understand why Macklemore puts out music as white man but Dicks hasn’t read Ellison (keys are in Eliison’s work) difficult for is who are trained with traditional academic speech to see this as something other than militant Complexity of AA Art is not new, but Wheatley is not considered like other poets because she brings a different background to table in her poetry (bracketed by experience of slavery) Idea that Art becomes gradually more complex, sophistocated as slaves shake off the shackles of slavery Intellectual establishment is brought Face to face with genius becomes black genius rather than human genius white supremacy cannot consider all black people human and intelligent so it sees black literature as the exception rather than the rule subject to higher modes of thinking White supremacist belief that Genius can only come in the form of art, music, but not literature and philosophy for blacks who came from Africa and escaped the clutches of Africa. Ellison is signifying- taking something old and making it new (like quilting) cobling together different elements to create a whole Engoma- music and dance, the drum. In Africa it is all three. Ceremony, life, living(more than just the drum) Directive and indirective signifying Douglass- not a solitary voice, unique in his message….”You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man” (424). Sovereignty over self cannot be given but freedom is a right. Education puts us in a more powerful position and also a more dangerous position because of free will; now we must make a choice what we will do. Douglass lets the horse go so that he can get a meal because he is hungry. Thus he is sent to the slave breaker. The seasoning station in the middle passage- trained to be slaves / creating a mindset of a salve, overseer does brutal work of managing slaves. Covey’s reputation is steaked on his ability to break wily slaves. Myth of slavery- that people could be physically broken like horses. Trope- p. 427 position of physical dominance if a person stands over you and you are on the ground means that violence or rape is about to happen. Douglass is on his back, caught by roping the legs. But Douglass rises and comes to face Covey, grabbing by the neck. Hughes is a black slave who comes to help his master, but Douglass kicks him in the gut. Critics either mask or disemble First civil rights movement was 1860 not 1960s Primitivism is what results from people who can’t make sense of genius Black genius becomes a medium of exchange harnessed for the benefit of white people, commodified for entertainment of the very group that deemed it primitive. Ellison argues that it is interesting that people who propose to tell ppl about black experience refuse to tell about how complex those experiences are. Relies on a rhetoric that blackness is this stereotypical thing that we have been taught it is. Misogyny in one person is just as bad as it is in another. Representative of drug dealers but not black people, masculinity, etc. legitimate critique is that black image of men is that you are straight and don’t let these hos get your money. AALit is set against an Amer. Backdrop- multicolored fabric- appreciate differences. Lily White Most come to class not knowing who Mammy Till, Maria Stewart, Coldtrain- Jazz, Excludes Eskimo, other groups, Etiological myth – cannot know Amer. Lit if you don’t know AA Lit and NA lit, etc. understand imagery being used in public arena. History is not fact, is is myth because it is what we imagine to be true. Read Chestnut for Thurs. Coming of Grandison and bio Understand Huckleberry Fin and Dominic Dicks so we can articulate what is happening with Macklemore. W9th century America Public image of blackness.
