Preparation for Ling 101 Final Fall 2010 1 Materials covered FR Chapters 2 3 4 8 10 Lectures and Lecture Notes Video Secret ofthe Wild Child Materials covered in discussion section and homework assignments 2 Types ofquestions The exam will contain questions and problems morphology and syntax ofthe types you have worked on for your homework You will be asked to provide Word Formation Rules word structure trees analyze morphological data from another language draw syntactic sentence trees based on the PS rules we have covered in class analyze syntactic data om other languages brie y explain some basic concepts andor provide examples ofbasic concepts analyze some simple child language data discuss various sociolinguistic phenomena based on book as well as lecture and lecture notes 3 Review Notes Review Session Since there are already outlines for all the topics we have covered in class on the website no additional review notes will be provided There WILL be a review session in the Discussion Section before the nal exam Bring any questions you have to the Discussion Section The TAs will also go over some points about the last topics covered Language Acquisition Language and Society since we discussed them only brie y in class 4 How much ofthe text book should be studied There is much more in the text than can be mastered in one semester Since the chapters we cover inthe second half of the semester are easier to understand than those of the rst halfof the semester you will be responsible for materials inthe text that might not have been covered in class In addition to the materials covered in class I expect youto know the materials in the following sections ofthe FR Text Ch 2 Only BASIC concepts Not actual structure ofbrain or speci c case studies Ch 3 All materials Ch 4 Focus on topics discussed in class and discussion sections You will only need to use the Phrase Structure rules we have been using not others that may appear in the text Ch 8 All materials with the following exception Learning a second language Sectioni to end ofchapter Ch 10 All materials main points ibe sure you can give examples ofdifferent types of dialectal characteristics phonological lexical syntactic as well as some speci c characteristics of the American English dialects covered in detail in the text 5 How to study for the Final Exam Study your notes om the lectures and discussion sections and the notes onthe website Be sure you still can do your homework assignments Be sure you study the materials in the text indicated above As with the midterm the nal exam questions are generally easier than the homework assignments so if you can do the assignments properly you should do quite well on the exam Be sure to ask any questions you have at the Discussion Section after Thanksgiving There will be several extra credit questions at the end
