9707 Telnet Telnet is an application which provides terminal emulation connections to remote machines The application consists of two pieces of software that cooperate The client which runs on the machine that is requesting the service and the server which runs on the computer providing the service The network provides the medium by which the two communicate The simplest way to use telnet is from the command line of the client machine type telnet ltaddressgt where ltaddressgt is the domainstyle address of the remote machine Hgt telnet bayouuhedu Assuming the server application is running on the remote machine it will respond with possibly some messages followed by the standard quotloginquot prompt ofthe remote machine Use of University of Houston computing and network facilities requires prior authorization Unauthorized access is prohibited Usage may be subject to security testing and monitoring Abuse is subject to criminal prosecution A complete manual of security policies and procedures is available at httpwwwuhedu in the Administration directory Compaq Tru64 UNIX V51A Rev 1885 creekuhedu login When a telnet connection is made to a remote machine the user is then in quotterminal emulationquot mode and simply logs into the remote machine All text typed at the local machine is given to the remote machine as ifit were typed there In this mode the user is never giving commands to the telnet program itself When the user logs out of the remote machine the connection is closed and telnet terminates creekuhedugt logout Connection to host lost Hgt However there are two ways to give commands to telnet itself First ifyou type telnet without an address you are in the telnet client program with a telnetgt prompt and without a connection to a remote machine net temporarily to the telnetgt prompt to enter commands to the telnet client Unless you have quotclosedquot the session on the remote machine you can return to it by simply typing quotenterquot at the telnet prompt after which you are back to the remote host Hgt telnet bayouuhedu Use of University of Houston computing and network facilities requires prior authorization Unauthorized access is is often confusion between the close and quit commands which are commands to the telnet client and the command used to quotlogoutquot on the remote system If you simply type quotclosequot or quotquitquot at the command prompt ofthe remote system and it is not a command recognized by that operating system then nothing will happen bayuhedugt close close Command not found bayuhedugt quit quit Command not found bayuhedugt 9707 Although you can quotescapequot to your telnet client and then give the close command to terminate the connection or the quit command to terminate the telnet client we urge you not to terminate things this way On some systems the server will hang and you will not be able to telnet back to that system easily In fact we once had an IBM mainframe where if something happened to yourtelnet session to it you had to phone the mainframe operator to disconnect you You should always quotlogoutquot at the command prompt of the remote system it is not always the word quotlogoutquot that does this on another of our old mainframes it was quotbyequot telnet to Engineering Unix The quottelnet serverquot alias to which all users should connect when using
