PREPARE: Responding to Disclosure 3-15-16 Addressing Relationship Violence: How to help someone you care about - Tell them directly you believe they are in an unhealthy relationship - Give them specifics (don’t be vague!!) - Point out the dangers of staying in the relationship - If you are ever concerned about someone’s safety, you need to be the person to call 911 and say “this isn’t right” - The most dangerous part of an abusive relationship is the very end when they decide to leave (make sure they have in place what is needed to leave the relationship safely) Responding to disclosure has a huge impact on how someone will heal—be positive! - Negative response: victim blaming, focus on self, treating them differently, attempts to control actions o Impact on the survivor: lower perceived control over the situation, depression, anxiety, poor coping strategies, they may disengage from support of others - Positive response: emotional support, practical support (help them figure out how to go about things), saying “It is not your fault.” o Perceived control over healing, positive social coping, adaptive coping strategies, more likely to go to others for support, better health outcomes How to go about this: STOP- stop for safety - Physical and emotional safety - “Is this an okay place to talk?” - Help the person with the small decisions so they feel in control and gradually become more capable of making larger decisions - Ask them before physically touching them. For some a hug is helpful, but for others it may be a trigger. Give the survivor all the control possible DROP- drop assumptions and listen - Avoid judging - Listen (with patience)- tell them you believe them - IT IS NOT THE TIME/NOR YOUR PLACE TO INVESTIGATE! (be a sponge, absorb the information you are being given and just listen) - Support the individual with compassion and empathy o “I believe you” o “Thank you for trusting me with this” - Validate feelings and reactions ROLL- roll to resources - Empower the individual by providing them with resource options so they can make informed decisions but DO NOT MAKE DECISIONS FOR THEM - Inform individuals of their right to confidential campus/community resources - Inform individuals of their right to report the information to non-confidential resources (Title IX or campus police) - Seek support for yourself- don’t feel like you have to help alone
