Week 2 ID s American Continental Empire Reservation system Dawes Act Ghost Dance Week 3 Lecture The Gilded Age This was the area between the end of the Reconstruction 1877 and the Progressive era 1901 This was the volatile period dominated by big business values political corruption and extremes of wealth and poverty During this era the US changed from an agrarian nation to a predominately urban and industrial power Gilded Put Shiny on not shiny Tragedy age 20 people in 1 room others were rich Between Civil War Went to urban nation Agricultural holding Business Dominated industries Cities couldn t govern the populations Shady business practices Rise of American Industry An abundance of natural resources development in technology new inventions an adequate labor supply a growing domestic market and fed support for industrial projects contributed to this rapid industrialization BY 1890 the value of industrial goods and services for the first time exceeded that of agricultural products Urbanization Within this new industrial order the city brought all of the nation s dynamic economic forces vast accumulations of capital business and financial institutions railroads factories and multitudes of manual and clerical workers By 1890 30 percent of Americans lived in urban areas Yet overcoming and unsanitary conditions led to many demanding increases in city services New Immigration 18 million immigrants arrived in the US between 1880 and 1910 Yet unlike earlier immigrants Who mainly came from northern and western Europe these quotNew Immigrants were generally catholic or Jewish and came largely from southern and eastern Europe or China Because they weren t Protestant and were culturally foreign they were not welcomes by all in America Intolerance resulted in the immigration Act of 1924 which instituted a deliberately discriminatory sys of national quotas Social Darwinism Drawing on simplified understanding of Darwinism science many social thinkers believed that the growth of large business and at the expense of small enterprises as well as the wealth of the few alongside the poverty of most was merely an indicator of the concept quotsurvived of the fittest Social Darwinism provided an intellectual justification for laws and social practices regarded African American and Indians Unionization In an era when the federal government pondered to big business and wealthy cap Blamed poverty on an individual s race or culture and treatment The American Federation of labor sought to increase wages reduced hours and improved working conditions for skilled workers yet Americans labor history was by significant violence such as what occurred during the Great Rail Strike of 1877 or the Haymarket Riot of 1886 Populism At the end of the 19th century formers also faced different prospects and their grass root efforts eventually crystalized in the populist party Populist leaders called onto people to raise up seize the reins of government and tame the power of the wealthy and the privileged Their cause was further fueled by financial panic of 1893 which followed by a 4 year depression Though the populist lost momentum of the election of 1896 many of their proposals were indeed extracted into law in the 20th century
