Week 7    3/14/16    Bunraku Theatre:  ● Puppet theatre.  ● Originated before 1600.  ● Rapid development in 19th century.  ● 1703 puppeteers visible to audience.  ○ Operated by three puppeteers.  ○ 1. Omozoukai ­ primary puppeteer.  ○ 2. Two apprentices.    Performed by chanter that sits to the left of stage.  ● Narrates story of puppets acting out.    Tradition Born In Osaka:  ● 90 people work together to make this work.    10 years of operating feet. → ready to operate head and body.  10 years of operating left hand. → ready to operating head and body.    Currently 44 puppeteers working.    Books handed out from generation to generation (chanter).  ● Techniques.    Some plays performed by 7 chanters.    Chanter has to be able to express all expressions.  ● Start getting voice at 60.    3/16/2016    NO CLASS ­ NO NOTES!
