September 10th 2014 Guest Speaker The Mayor of Lawrence Kansas You can not come up short or make mistakes on the budget 0 You are responsible for all the residents of Lawrence KS o This is difficult because you have to be able to guess snow days because snow removal costs money 0 You have to be able to guess the price of a gallon of gas 0 Everyone has an input hard to satisfy everyone We have to have income 1 Property taxes 2 Sales taxes a 87 on every sale in the City of Lawrence Someone asked a question about tickets They are huge part of revenue Lawrence tried to petition for a shopping center on 31st and Iowa it was not approved because it would put Mass Street out of Business Mass Street is one of the main tourist attractions of Kansas There are approximately 88000 people in Lawrence Kansas There are 30 buildings that Lawrence has to take care of The needs of community include the following 0 New library 0 New recreation center 0 New police force I We will need to raise taxes to have the budget for this We raise money by the sale of bonds bonds are an IOU from the city and the city pays you back with interest There is no interest tax on Municipal Bonds Government does not need to be in the way of starting businesses Roads and Development Planning o 23rd and Iowa is connected to K10 Highway 0 6th and Iowa is connected to 40 Highway 0 They are property of the state however this year Lawrence will now own these streets and it will become property of the city The state has agreed to pay for the repair of these streets one last time before the end of the year 2014 That is why there is so much construction going on simultaneously This was not planned and if it could be avoided to eliminate traffic it would be 0 All construction should be completed by November 15th the latest The City of Lawrence ha a 48hr snow ordinance You must shovel your sidewalk and property within that time frame or you are fined
