E LIGHTENMENT STUDY GUIE Haydn was the first productive composer in the Enlightenment period He was born in 1732 eighteen years before the Baroque period ended Haydn was known mostly as an instrumental composer He made the Symphony what it is today Haydn was in the employ of the Esterhazy family in Austria He was sort of the Grandfather of all music at the time Although born during the time ofthe baroque he did not compose in the Baroque style but instead was influenced by much ofthe styles in the Baroque Hogarth was a masterful painter during this era and someone I compare to the style of Haydn Haydn composed 104 Symphonies each with four movements Allegro Andante Minuet or Trio and Vivace He wrote other incidental music including one Oratorio and some operas but was known for his instrumental works Mozart was probably the most productive of this period His style is considered gallant which is compared to the style of David the French painter whose style is rococo These two styles dominated the Enlightenment period David is known for his painting of the Oath of the Horatii Hogarth s well known painting is the Rakes Progress Mozart composed at least 41 Symphonies however only 40 remain in tact at this time He took Opera to a new height by composing in every style at that time His operas were Grande Op ra Comique Op ra Seria Op ra Tragique and Opera Buffa which is his operas that show off his playful style and express comedy Op ra Comique is the French style of Serious Opera Mozart was considered a Child Prodigy and never really grew up to adulthood however he was quite serious about his music and artistic genius His last composition was a Requiem massa death mass which he never finished It is not known who finished the work His chief rival during his lifetime was Antonio Salieri who was Emporor Joseph39s court composer Mozart was an employee of the Arch Bishop of Salzburg until moving to Vienna There he became an employee of Emperor Joseph but not his court composer Salieri was extremely jealous of Wolfgang yet pretended to be his friend At the end of his life Salieri was by his side Other composers of this era were the two African composers Jos Mauficio Nu esGarcia who lived in Spain and Chevalier de St Georges who lived in Paris Both men were African born Chevalier de St Georges was director of the Paris Opera and produced some of Mozart39s operas as well as Haydn39s operas Nu es Garcia was a Catholic priest as well as a composer He is well known for his composition of the Requiem mass Chevalier was a Symphonic composer Both composer39s works are available currently The last composer and painter of this era were Beethoven and Goya Beethoven was the only true German composer of the period The others were both Austrians Beethoven was born in Bonn Germany in 1770 he was considered a Rebel in every way as well as Goya Both men admired Napoleon until he declared himself Emperor of Europe Beethoven wrote nine symphonies his third he devoted to Napoleon however he changed the name of Symphony 3 to Eroica and inserted a Funeral March in the second movement instead ofthe traditional andante movement Beethoven39s works were large complicated and some were extremely difficult to perform He only wrote one opera called Fedelio but wrote four overtures for this work that are performed as concert pieces Overtures are named Fidelio Leonora 1 Leonora 2 and Leonora 3 Beethoven was considered a Rebel due to his rebelling against society His last Symphony was the ninth and considered a choral symphony based on Friedrich Schiller39s Ode to Joy This was Beethoven39s last composition In his diary he wrote a letter to his Immortal Beloved which described the woman in his life Unlike Mozart he never married It is important to note that although this is probably the shortest of all periods it is the most productive The parallels are Haydn an Austrian musicianHogarth a British painter Mozart an Austrian musicianDavid a French painter and Beethoven a German musicianGoya a Spanish painter The common threads are HaydnHogarth styles are businesslike MozartDavid the playful styles Rococo and Stile gallant BeethovenGoya both despised Napoleon and both lost their hearing Primitive Artists who are self taught Producer Person responsible for nancing productions Program music Textual reference to a piece of music Protagonist
