MTSU JAZZ STUDIES DRUM SET CURRICULUM INSTRUCTOR DERREK PHILLIPS OBJEC39 VE The focus of this course is to provide comprehension of the role and responsibility of a drum set player Technique vocabulary dexterity listening skills and application of written music will be emphasized in every session Rudiments and Technique Focus will be placed upon musical vocabulary rhythmic variety and rudiments and physicality grip motion and posture Independence and Feel Orchestration of all four limbs and sensibility will be stressed Transcriptions and genres Grasps of a variety of musical styles will be covered In depth analysis will be of utmost importance Periodic transcriptions will be assigned throughout the semester Accuracy and cleanliness will be noted Improvising Time will be dedicated to in depth listening and imitation Review and Jury preparation This time will be dedicated to a summarized overview jury performance finals Dates to be announced w Sticks spiral notebook manuscript paper or notebook and pencil or pen Personal equipment cymbals bass drum pedal and sticks is needed for each lesson Audio and video recording devices are recommended but optional REQUIRED LITERATURE Based upon proficiency level mm Lessons will be held every Monday and Tuesday excluding November 14 amp 15 Missed lessons cannot be rescheduled If you attend class regularly you should not have any problem being successful in this course However attendance is seen as the student s responsibility Since this a performance based class it is in your best interest to attend class In the event of your absences you are responsible for getting the information covered from one of your classmates Students are required to attend master classes GRADING Attendance and preparation are keys to success Each unexcused absence will result in the lowering of grade by one letter Composite of final grades Weekly assignments 50 Jury performance 25 Attendance 25 Other concerns Attending performances A great way to gain understanding of the how to approach the drum set is watching and listening first hand You are strongly encouraged to be present at concerts and recording session that are NOT school related Extra credit will be given for proof of attendance Reasonable Accommodations for Students with Disabilities If you have a disability that may require assistance of accommodations or if you have any questions related to any accommodation for testing note taking reading etc please speak with me as soon as possible For questions and concerns feel free to contact the Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action and Disability Services Department EAD at 615 322 4705 Derrek Phillips dephillimtsuedu phillipspham6gmailcom 973 420 8893 cell Campus hours Mondays 9am 3pm and 7 9pm Tuesdays 9am 3pm
