Day Care Trends and Developments Day care facilities and programs have been around for years It is atrend that has grown from simple daytime only care facilities to 247 facilities and facilities that are located inside the parents place of business During the course of this paper I will look into the evergrowing need for day care facilities why these facilities have attracted the attention of entrepreneurs the interlocking of child development programs and day care facilities and the credentials needed by day care staff members to work with the child development programs According to the Department of Health and Human Services as of the year 2007 635 of mothers with children under the age of 6 worked outside of their homes This fact alone shows that there is a need for daycare centers and facilities According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Child day care services provided about 859200 wage and salary jobs in 2008 There were an additional 428500 selfemployed and unpaid family workers in the industry most of whom were family child care providers although some were selfemployed managers of child care centers Jobs in child day care are found across the country mirroring the distribution of the population Centerbased day care should continue to expand its share of the industry because an increasing number of parents prefer its more formal setting and believe that it provides a better foundation for children before they begin traditional schooling However family child care providers will continue to remain an important source of care for many young children because some parents prefer the more personal attention that such a setting can provide If these numbers continue to climb the way they have been over the next several decades the daycare industry will be one that will continue to help the employment market This is one of the reasons why entrepreneurs have taken an interest in the area Another reason for the spiked interest in the daycare industry is found in The Care Economy s World Trends and Forecasts section This states The professionalization of caregiving into a full edged service economy is a global trend In the United States companies such as Child Care Inc and Caregivers On Call contract with corporations to provide inhome childcare services for employees with last minute emergencies notes Business Ethics magazine And corporate concierges people who run errands for employeesare another phenomenon of the rising care economy Along the lines of successful day care programs is the addition of child development programs to daycare facilities To de ne child development programs is a hard task to do However a simple de nition would be an early education and developmental program for children normally inthe prek age range This is a more intense program than the basic daycare operations and would allow the centers to charge more for enrollment fees A paraphrase from the Care Economy s World Trends and Forecasts section states that in order for care facilities to continue to profit they must add new ideas and continuously keep up with the new demands of parents on daycare centers I believe this means adding programs like child development The challenge of adding a child development program in a daycare facility is the level of education required by the staff members working in the child development areas A regular day care worker is normally not required to have a specific level of completed education or education emphasis However in order for one to work in the child development programs they must meet specific requirements There are even entire degree programs offered at major universities dedicated to child development studies While there is a challenge of finding qualified staff for these programs the programs are an added benefit to the facility Work Cited US Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration Maternal and Child Health Bureau Child Health USA 2007 Bureau of Labor Statistics US Department of Labor Career Guide to Industries 2010 11 Edition Child Day Care Services on the Internet at httpwwwbls v 1 htm Academic Search Premier Database 2007 The Care Economy Section WORLD TRENDS amp FORECASTS
