CMLTANTH 3190 Deszo Benedek Week 45 Tuesday Sept 9 2014 the only way you could trade fish was if it was with a Chinese merchanttaboo forbids giving fish outside the family unity the Yami are taught from day 1 to always give the best of what they have and then they can expect to receive the same o creates a good relationship with friends and neighbors o acting differently is looked down upon gossip if you are caught stealing they will publicly demand that you give it back o if you don t comply the family that have been stolen from will arm themselves and take it back by force fighting is its own ritual involving several steps there is no music instruments songs when the Yami arrived from the land of the ancients they came in waves o each wave family formed a village o land of the ancients Ivatan the land that Shi Mo Rapaw populated all 6 villages speak the same language except Ivalino all locations start with I you are never alone secluded no privacy they used outhouses as bathroom Dr B grew up never having his own room and using outhouses shared a bed with his father there were no locks on doors the Yami grow up with no concept of bathroom related shame they are familiar with the concept of paper but they don t have any they use pebbles for toilet paper when men go dive all the women wash themselves in the brook steam the divers have to rinse their bodies in freshwater after being in the ocean you ll itch if you don t even during the day the houses are fairly dark because of thatched roots lots of very large ying roaches they do not bother the Yami o they actually serve a purpose they clean the house at night by eating organic matter there are also poisonous snakes and insects there is no need to shave the men don t have facial hair they only get one non gender specific meaningful name o they call it apiya ngaran the beautiful name o there is also the marahed a ngaran which is the ugly name or nickname that people call you behind your back technonomy is when the child changes the parent s name not vice versa o shi peter does not have a child o shamun peter is shi peter s father o shiman peter is shi peter s mother o if shi peter dies everyone falls back to their previous name o you have to keep people s names straight you can t call them by a previous name o your nickname stays the same your whole life Thursday Sept 11 2014 Margaret Mead movie day Tuesday Sept 16 2014 if someone dies their body is buried in a sitting position tied with rope with about a foot of dirt above their head going to the cemetery makes the Yami very nervous because the demons that were just released by death will be there if someone is suspected of dying an anito demon related death they will not receive a funeral o they are taken to the edge of the ocean to a big rock igang by a family member and thrown into the water so the marine life can dispose of them they used to just leave the bodies under a ledge o the Chinese brought over wild dogs at one point and those dogs began to eat the bodies o the dogs would bring body parts into the village and disrupt the taboo the igang is also a very tabooed place when climbing the mountain to cut down trees men aren t allowed to look down at the ocean and there are some parts where you have to remain silent even a place where you have to walk backwards taboo one time a man had an outburst and began hacking at trees and yelling o four men picked him up and ran him back to the village ignoring all the aforementioned taboos o the trees had belonged to a family that had been killed off by the vendetta tradition o the man once back in the village began seizing because the vongkow master demon of the mountain had stabbed him in the thigh o he died and was taken to the igang o Dr B couldn t even ask questions about this incident because it would break taboo makarid a person who can see the dead a social outcast Thursday Sept 18 2014 a shaman is someone who is very educated in herbal medicine o but so were the common folk all the Yami used herbal remedies that Taiwan used as well except for one the betel nut o from the areca plant has a slight narcotic effect o bitter so they cut it up and smear limestone paste onto it then a green leaf then a very thin slice of a vine o turns saliva bright red they spit it out and continue doing so until the fibers come apart then it is finished o start chewing it when they are young children and continue doing it throughout their life I even when they have no teeth they use a wood mortar and pestle to grind it up o they chew it to avoid the cold in the winter I it doesn t get that cold but the transition out of the water can be cold in the winter months o they also chew it to avoid hunger o it seals gaps in their teeth coating their teeth like a mouthguard I when it breaks off it reveals very white teeth I their teeth were so white because taro has a high uoride content Taiwan declared the Yami island to be theirs and they used it as an open air prison colony about 40 years before Dr Benedek arrived o the prisoners stole the Yami s women crops and boats so the Yami killed them after that Taiwan decided to secretly put a nuclear waste plant on the uninhabited part of the island o no one noticed until they started putting up power lines Dr Benedek kept track of time with the small digital clock on his voice recorder he also kept a daily log allowing him to keep track of the days o the days aren t that important there though he forgot about his birthday Dr Benedek would barter fish for eggs at first when adjusting to the single meal a day diet o remember that the Yami didn t eat eggs o he would let the eggs fry on rocks he started losing weight very fast even though he ate and worked the same amount as all the other men o he looked into old field work and found he was lacking an enzyme that would break down their food o he had a woman who had just given birth throw up in a coconut shell mixed it with his food and ate it it cured him
