Week 5 Sports Management Gender equality Tuesday This week we watched a bunch of youtube videos that had to do with gender and how women are portrayed in the media Overall Question How do women fit into the landscape of sports what is their participation what is the difference between men and women sports how does the media portray them what kind of sponsorships do they get It is much easier for both men and women to identify male athletes professional or collegiate because they tend to have more exposure in the media Hence why nike commercial usually have football both professional and collegiate because male athletics has a much larger fan base than women Nike sponsors colleges because of the large fan base it s a great market and when students buy what the athletes wear they believe to some degree that they will be just as good at the sport as the athlete is here is the first video we watched httpswwwvoutubecomwatchvuadmO7Cuoc here is the second one wwwvoutubecomwatchvtk2TV 3iVKQ this second video depicts how women s basketball in mocked the women are constantly thought of as lesbian No one thinks that they are really great at the sport they say it s not fun to watch it moves too slow Thursday Catch 22 remember this one media needs women s sports to have a larger fan base fans of the women s sports want more coverage for the sports we watched a news broadcast where Andy Binot made a derogatory comment about women s sports and how it s not fun to watch women athletic events They are less marketable and don39t deserve to be televised We also talked about beach volleyball and the outfits that they were Why do men get to wear tank tops and shorts but the women wear bikini bottoms and sports bras why is it appealing What makes it okay for women to be half naked and men in a complete outfit There was also a video for the ESPN Body lssue comparing mens photos to women s photos Men have black background implying strength and athleticism Women have white backgrounds implying purity it has nothing to do with their sport once again women are being overly sexualized by the media
