Notes from class 92514 that were not included in the Power Points or readings Internal Family Systems Also Known As Parts Work This type of counseling looks at all of a person s parts For example you could write one word descriptions of everything that you are and those are your parts For example you could write a huge list of one word descriptions of who you are ie female student motivated controlling hate your roommate Then the method is to look at the parts that have negative feelings for you Perhaps you are controlling and this makes you feel bad and you fight with your roommate all the time This is the part of you that you want to change You begin to look at WHY you are controlling This is not a bad part of you there is a reason you do this and you need to find out why Find your manager The second step is to find your manager This is the part of you that is proactive Lets say a roommate leaves a mess in your apartment You become very angry and try to control the mess by asking the roommate to clean up the mess This part is the warning part of you Reaction Then the roommate starts arguing with you about the mess You jump into your re ghter mode which causes a reaction Your firefighter part of you is always on alert and ready to act Your reaction is to throw her stuff out the window This is the behavior you want to change So you start at the beginning which is to find out why you are controlling which makes you react with anger and physical actions Once you start examining why you are so controlling you realize that when you were a child your mother was an alcoholic your life with her was chaotic and unsure from day to day and you never felt like you had control of your life So trying to control your roommate s housekeeping is your way of trying to control your environment It is not a bad behavior but it is not working for you and you want to change it
