September 23 2015 Good and Bad Design 0 Bad interface design could possibly lead to death or other extreme effects Ex Video of guy on YouTube caught breaking his computer and printer out of frustration from the interface Continuum of Design 0 Interface can affect our emotions 0 Some interfaces look good but aren t useful or functional Ex The button The most common interface Elevator controls and labels on the bottom row all look the same so it is easy to push a label by mistake instead of a control button People don t make the same mistake for the labels and buttons on the top row Ex2 The vending machine Need to push button first to activate reader normally insert bill first before making selection Contravenes well known convention Button aesthetic Ex iPhone and iPad Good and bad design Ex Remote controls for TV TV sets used to be TV sets but aren t really anymore because they are interfaces for all sorts of functions just like a phone isn t really a phone apps calculator internet etc One problem with remote controls is that the buttons are physical if we want to remove some we can t That s what drives the movement towards digital remotes like on a phone but the cost is still pretty high Remote control physical shape is also important a lot have an aesthetic design to fit in the hand better Conceptual grouping colorcoded buttons Design Principles Visibility Ex cars more controls in cars now and more designs coming out to improve interface and visibility Cars are looking more and more like a cockpit and can cause problems if it creates confusion Ex2 Elevators again Dr Biocca went to an elevator in Sweden once the elevator interface was so bad someone had to stand in the elevator to help people out Had to slide card in nearly invisible slip before going to floor pressing buttons didn t help How could you make this action more visible Could provide auditory message but what about language issues Could provide a big label next to the card reader that flashes when someone enters Ex3 Visibility automatic faucets Invisible automatic controls can make it more difficult to use for instance can t read signal if you re wearing black 0 Feedback and contraints Ex ATMs Still frustrating design should be able to use by everyone like nontechnical people grandmas Sometimes there are delays because it takes a while for the instructions to go through this causes people to press more buttons because they think the machine stopped working Now they have mechanical noises generated to give an auditory que like hey I m working calm down This is sound feedback Includes sound highlighting animation and combinations of these Sends information back to the user about what has been done Ex2 When screen button is clicked on a sound andor red highlight is feedback as to prevent confusion and let user know the machine has heard the operation Constraints restricting the possible actions that can be performed Helps prevent user from selecting incorrect options Physical objects can be designed to constrain things only one way you can insert a key in a lock etc Error prevention Also seen when selections are greyed out and unclickable People are happier when they have less options because they take less time and are less confused Mapping icon to function Match between system and real world like stove controls figuring out the spatial relationship between one control and the front left burnerback rightetc How to design better Color coding 0 Consistency consistency in function provides easier movement to new devices Design interfaces to have similar operations and use similar elements for similar tasks Ex Always use same key combo commands for different devices 0 When consistency breaks down What happens if there is more than one command starting with the same letter save spelling etc 0 Internal consistency External consistency Affordances 0 Physical to give a clue to action or function An attribute of an object that allows pe0ple to know how to use it ex a door handle affords pulling Interfaces are virtual and do not have affordances like physical objects 0 Doesn t make sense to talk about interfaces in terms of real affordances Instead interfaces are better conceptualized as perceived affordances Ex buttons that look like controls spinning or pressing or scrolling etc A movement to make interfaces seem more real and 3D The button you pull down on the start screen on your phone acts like a physical object it resists and changes color and feels like a tug but it s not actually there 0 Are some physical affordances obvious Ex doors that look like pull are push Virtual affordances would you know how to use all screen objects Ex when the trash icon was first invented other users around the world didn t know how to use it because the trash can is an American convention Ex2 Little lines in the corner of the screen just two lines yet the user knows it suggests to pull What if you were a novice user Simplicity Google beat Yahoo and other competitors because of its simplicity search boxes used to be very noisy and crowded Aesthetic and minimalist design 0 If anything looks too complex people don t like it because it looks like too much work Ex Airplane cockpits Cockpits are supposed to give feedback Same noise that lets pilot know about airplane flaps being down was the noise that let them know cabin pressure was down One time in midair that noise went off and the pilots thought their flaps had a problem but really it was the cabin pressure There was also a visual warning but the cockpit was so complex they missed it Everyone died from lack of oxygen Ex2 Some commands are so important that they need to take priority over others how do you break through the noise They had the command eject now recorded with the voice of pilots loved ones because we are tuned to hear those voices above other sounds
