Sumair Vyas Submitted To Prof Leah A Pennywark Date 25th September 2015 Close Reading Assignment 1 Interpreter of Maladies This Blessed House The book by J humpa Lahiri The Interpreter of Maladies is a collection of short stories of which one is This Blessed House The story is about a newly married couple Sanjeev and Twinkle are moving into a new house in Hartford This house seems to have been previously inhabited by Christians The story is about Twinkle Sanjeev s wife finding different Christian figurines and artifacts left in the house by the previous owners and start to grow a liking towards them I picked this story for my closed reading assignment because it is a very simple story but yet can be very complex and can be analyzed in many different ways The passage that I am focusing on begins on page 147 with He did not know if and ends on page 148 wit was there not to love I picked the passage from the story because it is Sanjeev talking to himself and having con icting feelings about his wife Twinkle It is a passage where Sanjeev is introspecting and trying to rediscover his feelings of love for Twinkle and at the same time remembering why he married Twinkle in the first place This passage pretty much explains us the main core of Sanjeev s feelings and how he married a girl just to fill a void Their parents arranged Sanj eev and Twinkle s marriage but Sanjeev agrees to marry Twinkle for reasons other than love Sanjeev is a very organized successful and goal oriented person He already owned a house and had a job before he even met Twinkle Sanjeev has a very planned and organized life The only section in his life that felt incomplete was his love life This is the passage from the story where he is actually trying to figure out what love truly is Lahiri exclaims S anj eev did not know what love was only what he thought it was not Lahiri 147 Sanjeev clearly does not know what love is but he knows what he wants in his life Even though he doesn t love Twinkle she is just there to fill that void she is only there because Sanjeev was really lonely and wanted someone to eat his meals with and someone to be there for him at the end of a hectic workday J humpa Lahiri has expressed this sentiment in the long sentence spanning from page 147 to page 148 starting from it was not returning to an empty and ending at now and again to kiss their shoulders or necks Lahiri 147148 This excerpt depicts how depressed Sanjeev was and the reason why it was not love but more of making Twinkle a means to an end I feel like this passage was probably the key to discovering Sanjeev s sentiments and feelings that were pretty much constant throughout the short story The way that Sanjeev feels throughout the story is really important as it allows the reader to sympathize with the character and at the same time dislike him because he uses his Wife as only a means to an end Which is very unethical Reference aJhumpa Lahiri quotThis Blessed House quot Houghton Mi lin Harcourt 1999 147148 Print
