Film Art tells us that quotby blending or varying or even rejecting genre conventions lmmakers force viewers to reset their expectations and engage with the lm in fresh waysquot 333 Ripley is a good example of this because not only is she a competent female protagonist in a genre dominated by enterprising male characters but she also shows characteristic signs of motherhood and nurturing that are not frequently found in sci but rather in comedies and dramas Additionally Aliens along with the other lms in the series skillfully blends sci and horror to create an atmosphere of tension and fear set in a futuristic realbutnotreal place Harsh lighting a convention of horror lms is used to give the clinical robotic feel of the spaceship a creepier more sinister edge an edge that quite clearly accentuates the terrifying action sequences in a lm series involving alien parasites that explode from within a human host The development and expansion of sci as a genre is also necessarily linked to cultural and technological developments in society As the book notes quotcomputergenerated imagery has made it easy to conjure up unreal creatures and imaginary landscapesquot 333 and with the popularity of the US space programs in the 60s and 705 there is more room in popular culture for the speculation about what else might be quotout therequot So there are a number of different things that in uence the way genre lms are created and intermingled The book notes however that the fact that generic lines can be blurred and moved around does not mean that there aren t still clear distinctions between lms of different genres To pull a quote directly quotAlthough we can t pin down a single description of a genre that will apply for all time we can recognize that at any moment in lm history lmmakers critics and audiences agree closely on the genres in playquot 337 For instance while Aliens pulls conventions from horror lighting harsh sound effects at moments of suspense family drama the relationship between Ripley and Newt and action militarized weaponry vehicle explosions it can still be clearly placed within the boundaries of science ction The futuristic setting of the colony space travel extensive shots of medical and scienti c equipment and the existence of extraterrestrial life as a main focus are all recurring themes in sci throughout lm history and the conventions taken from other genres serve to accentuate and reinforce the science ction aspects
