Oleg Mironov CS 312 Group E Search Engines Rank Revenue Over Relevance In today s world the Internet is by far the biggest source of information Search engines however are our guides Whenever someone needs any kind of information the first website he would surf to is in fact a search engine From there he will be able to find many other sites containing the needed content It all seems very simple but it s not The problem with search engines is that they can be a little bias When performing a search the paid for websites also known as sponsors or advertisements usually come up first This is due to the fact that search engines make money off these sites The more hits the sites get the more money they receive Unfortunately this doesn t help the users because they are not getting the best information possible Instead they re getting the information that is most profitable for the search engine This also in uences the opinions of the users because they are forming their opinions based on what these companies want them to think Also smaller sites might not appear significantly on relevant searches because they may not be able to pay the search engines as much as some bigger sites In order to try and fix this problem a group called Commercial Alert complained to the Federal Trade Commission about paid placements in search engine results being used as relevant results The FTC responded by asking search engines to clearly provide disclosure ofpaid placements or face possible fines of as much as 11000 per violation Most search engines have agreed to follow FTC s guidelines and are now warning users ofpaid sites However there is still another problem Some merchant websites are now built on XML coding Most search engines do not pick up XML which is why sometimes paid websites appear in regular search results Unfortunately right now Google is the engine that does not accept such sites It s important to be careful when searching for information on the Internet these days It is better to use several sources and never truly believe everything that is found in the search results References Fairlie Rik Search Engines Rank Revenue Over Relevance The Computer Shopper March 10 2003
