Jeff Bartosh Evaluation j db07bacu edu 9729538640 To Dr John Fleming From Jeff Bartosh Date Monday 22 2010 Re Teacher Evaluation This memo is an Employee Evaluation Report written from a student s perspective on your ability to teach your class effectively Overview This memo will break apart different aspects a teacher should have when teaching college students More precisely the student I will be 39 quot your strenoths weakne e detailed ways to improve your weaknesses your portrayal as a Christian role model and nally a monetary evaluation of your current salary by assessment of your teaching abilities In no way is this meant to be demeaning It is simply a critique on various ways you can improve yourself as well as a few characteristics in which you excelled at in comparison with other professors Strengths This semester has been a great opportunity for me to learn from experienced professors like you This is one aspect I praise the College of Business Administration on Many professors understand that certain parts of business cannot be taught within the limits of a textbook Experiential learning is an enormous part of many classes but your class outweighs most others because of the many different projects you incorporated into your curriculum We learned through the manual system how the accounting process works through different channels factoring down into the financial statements We learned through the Peachtree project the basics of accounting for companies from a digital outlook This class has had some good opportunities that many jobs seekers wish they would have experienced in college The other main strength Iwant to emphasize is your preparation on organizing your lessons into defined points Some teachers tend to jump around and teach through a handout they distribute to the class but you teach without the use of notes It secures our conclusion that you know the subject if you are teaching blindly I feel teachers go through the motions per se if they read straight off their handout Therefore I do appreciate the extra effort in being prepared for every class period Through teaching us real application software to putting forth more time into the lecture you give each class I feel this class always has something new awaiting us each time we arrive Weaknesses Despite the couple of strengths in your teaching habits there are also a few aws I have noticed throughout this semester First I personally felt you would talk down to certain students At the beginning of the semester I was quite interested in your class but my ambition fell when you were sarcastic to my questions or shoot down my answers I do not know if you noticed during your lectures but the first several weeks of class I would constantly answer your questions However as the weeks progressed my voiced started becoming scarce It all started when a few classmates and I noticed your rude comments toward my questions which then slowly moved into unnecessary sarcasm to my answers It received so much notice that my friend when on the subject of accounting would tell guys in club how much you hated me in your class I still to this day do not fully understand why I receive different treatment then others classmates but through my eyes this was the most in uential part of your teaching that lead to my annoyance of your class not the class in general The second weakness is your monotone voice Your voice along with other unappealing teaching habits is a perfect atmosphere and is known to cause students to fall asleep Every student of yours that I have spoken to agrees your class would be more interesting if you had a more exuberant voice such as Dr Rachael Robinson If you could switch to different tones or show some excitement in the subject then many students would be a little more interested during your lectures This closely correlates to the third weakness of seeming too jaded Most class periods the vibe you give off seems to be wishing the day was already over My mom is a teacher so I understand when teachers cannot wait for some days to end But teaching is your profession and everyone should enjoy what they do with their life I believe you do care about your job and hopefully you love teaching but try to show it once in a while You will not only get students more interested in the subject but they will also retain the information better if you show you love teaching it This can be done in many different ways For instance bring a current event into class that will grasp the students attentions right at the beginning of class Any way you can induce the thought of how this subject can be fun students will produce a much higher retention rate then beginning class with your infamous monotone line alright let s get started Finally Ibelieve you could work on teaching the material that will be covered on the test Your lectures seem to only encompass a slim part of the test which causes us to not fully comprehend the information when reading the book Every single teacher in COBA believes the test should re ect the lecture For example a brand new professor this semester in COBA asked the students opinion of what he could do to prepare us better for the next test since everyone bombed the first one We all agreed upon that slides not in his lecture should not be on the test therefore we should be tested on information he mentioned during class This shows how open even a new professor is to our environment at ACU but still you stand strong on us learning and teaching ourselves a large amount of accounting I do not mean for these comments to be rude or insulting I do however hope you learn from my critiques and take them into consideration when you teach next semester Christianity is a big part of ACU s campus and student life This sets us apart from many different schools and is solely the reason why students come to Abilene Therefore administration strongly suggests that all teachers incorporate faith and religion into each of their subjects Unfortunately I cannot even imagine how you would be able to integrate faith into your class except through touching on business ethics which you try to do but it does not emphasize Christian faith In conclusion it is not your fault because for your specific subject in accounting trying to be a Christian role model is not very relevant to the course Lastly this would not be a good critique if I left you without any specific suggestions on how to change up your teaching methods First strike most of the sarcasm unless you are truly familiar with the student because it comes across as offensive Next it would not hurt to use PowerPoint slides and upload those to blackboard so we can see them and you can use slides to create the exam which also eliminates the confusion on what we need to know for the test Also spice up the class s interest with real events that have happened recently so we can relate the material in class to actual situations And last of all allow group work This is not a reference from weaknesses because it is not a true weakness but merely a suggestion Most of your projects especially the first one take way too long to do alone It is also pointless to do because we have technology and software nowadays that can do most transactions with a click of a button rather than doing an entire month s transactions manually I know you want us to learn what accounting was like decades ago but please give us the ability to work in groups so it won t take 24 hours Ihope you take these suggestions in mind for future classes and even incorporate them into your other classes like in the MACC program I do find this specific accounting class interesting and it is a major part of accounting in today s society It would be helpful though to modify the teaching to make it a better experience for all the students Finally I would like to touch on a salary increase or decrease This is a good class and I am sure you have many more interesting classes that are in need of your experience and qualifications Therefore I suggest no change in salary If my improvements within the main body of this evaluation and the previous paragraph are taken into consideration then your future teacher evaluation scores should be much higher Thereby giving you raises in later years when you work to deserve them Again I do not recommend a salary reduction but I do believe you should keep your salary as it is with prospect of future raises if you improve your teaching methods Sincerely J eff Bartosh I hereby agree I have read this evaluation I Jeff Bartosh Chapter 12 jdb07bacuedu 9729538640 To Debbie Williams From Jeff Bartosh Date Tuesday August 31 2010 Re Chapter 12 Summary This memo is a brief synopsis of Chapter 12 Writing Job Application Letters in Business and Administrative Communication A Short Overview Throughout this memo you will receive a short summary of the construction and context of job application letters or as some call them cover letters and how they differ from resumes yet are essential to receiving that first interview everyone is seeking for The Summary This chapter brings together two other major fields studied within most college campuses psychology and communication and ties it into most everyday business mistakes college students and inexperienced unemployed workers face while searching for that dream job Not only are these certain issues overlooked but many are ignorant these exist First many people are solely focused on the resume which is important they forget that a quick few word summary of their experience on a paper will not suffice in today s competitive job market A resume of course is a big chunk of the opportunity you receive to impress those that matter However taking it a step farther by breaking down the main focuses of your resume into a detailed letter formatted with 3 wellorganized paragraphs will give you a much bigger step in front of the pack A few things to consider is that your resume is only one page in which you will get to comprise and squeeze all of your accomplishes on with as much detail while keeping it as concise and effective for the viewer to be interested Now if you took the time to prepare a one page job application so that the reader can see the outline of your experience resume and then understand the essential information and how your experience can help hisher company cover letter you will have already given him an insight into how your first interview would go But make sure you do not reuse the same job application letter like a generic letter for multiple rms There is a saying choose quality over quantity any day the same idea goes for cover letters It is a little more work than tweaking a resume but the outcome will be worth the effort Second you need to understand while constructing an application letter how your reader will interpret your meaning which is why a little psychoanalysis of the position you are going for and the personality of the reader is vital For example your personality should come across much more differently if you were applying for an advertising creative writing job compared to an accounting or management role In the advertising application letter you might add in more are and personality possibly a pun or a cliche Were as with the accounting or managerial role you will want to show experience and poise in your words but make sure you always have a positive tone in any job situation There are also some more crucial similarities within applying to a different eld of j obs You want to always sound con dent of yourself so they do not think they are hiring someone that might have elaborated on his resume Another crucial factor is do not show to many signs of begging or apologizing for not doing anything most bosses would not want to employ a suck up or someone that just sounds needy Also one of the probably the most hurtfulness problms you could do is have a potentially horrible grammar spellong and communication errors most companies would either throw away immediately or possibly show to all there friends at there company which will definiately not land you a job So check check and check again before you send it out to make sure Microsoft Word did not miss any errors and it reads smoothly And of course there are many other specific parts you must also include such as addressing letter to specific people indicate the position you are applying for show your knowledge and that you did a little research on the company refer to your resume and discretely ask for an interview but do not make it like a Where is Waldo or a series of dots that point to an invisible map on the back ofthe page just do not go begging for the job Finally when applying for a job you might be one of a few people that will get a lucky break into the hidden job market through some form of contact or networking However that does not mean you can forget about proper business etiquette If anything you must be more careful because if a buddy vouched for you then you are also representing them when you speak to their boss Also you might encounter a little more back and forth emailing with the boss then going through the company s normal proper recruitment process Therefore you must make sure you are on your guard and constantly delivering a professional communicating image Unfortunately if you were not one of the lucky ones than you might be sending many solicited job letters out to multiple firms in hopes of catching and reeling in a good company Again just be mindful of good grammar and not creating generic letters to a multitude of firms Ihope this memo a brief summary of chapter 12 in Business and Administrative Communication has helped with possible questions and con icts regarding creating effective communication even before you ever get the initial interview I wish you all the best luck Sincerely J eff Bartosh
