Point Quadrat Use Today you will use a point quadrat which make measurements more accurate by making counting distinctions more precise Today you will sample two separate areas One that is next to the road and one that is 30 meters in from the road Your eventual task is to see if there is a signi cant difference in the growth of the plants in the two different locations A point quadrat is a device with a 05mlong horizontal crossbar with ten measured holes in it and a supporting rod in the middle A straight object is put through each of the ten holes and used to gauge the frequency of a particular organism The body of the point quadrat looks like this Top view Side view Procedure 1 Mark out a 10m X 10m area with stakes and string Use the random number tables so that you can take 10 random samples within your large quadrat When you find the location within the large quadrat of your first set of number coordinates put the supporting rod of the point quadrat down on the spot indicated by the coordinates Orient the horizontal crossbar so that it is running easttowest Put the metal rod through each of the 10 holes in the crossbar and count whether or not the plant you re counting touches the metal rod for each hole It doesn t matter whether the plant touches the rod once twice five times or whatever only if it touches or not If it touches you count it as one Now turn the point quadrat 90 degrees so the crossbar runs northtosouth and do the same thing again 7 count how many times out often the plant touches the metal rod You now have a measurement that is the frequency of touches out of 20 for that spot within the 10m quadrat Record your data in an appropriate manner Repeat this measurement 9 more times in different locations within the quadrat using the random number table to get coordinates for your quadrat placement N L 4 V39 0
