A l 01 9 0 A A Five Unknown Analysis Procedure Test all 5 tubes with pH paper Separate the acid tubes from the basic tubes To the basic tubes a copper nitrate test should be run A pale blue solution means that NaOH is present if the solution turns a deep blue then NH3 or if a black precipitate forms then NaZS is present With the othertubes perform all the tests that will be performed on the acidic tubes To the acidic tubes test each of the tubes with a sulfate test If a white precipitate forms then sulfate is present Which means either NaZSO4 or H2804 is one of the unknown To any of the acidic tubes that didn t have sulfate then a chloride test needs to be performed Awhite precipitate proves that chloride is present If present then HCI NaCl BaCl2 or CuCl2 is the unknown To any of the acidic tubes that didn t contain sulfate or chloride then an iodine test needs to be performed If the hexane layer doesn t turn violet then no iodine is present If present Nal is the unknown present If no iodine chloride or sulfate is present then a nitrate test needs to be performed A lack of a brown ring indicates nitrate is not present If nitrate is present then AgNO3 CuNO32 or FeNO33 could be one of the unknowns Forthe tube that contained the chloride a barium test should be run If a white precipitate forms then the tube contains BaCl2 If the chloride tube did not have barium then a copper test should be run If the solution turns a dark blue then copper is present and the unknown is CuCl2 If neither barium nor copper are present then a look at the pH will tell if the solution is HCI or NaCl A very low pH indicates the presence of HCI To the tube that contained the nitrate a silver test should be performed If a white precipitate forms that confirms the presence of Ag N03 If no silver is present then a copper test should be performed If the solution turns a dark blue color then copper is present and the unknown is CuNO32 12 If no copper or silver is present then an iron test should be performed to confirm that the unknown is FeNO33 13 To any of the tubes that contain sulfate a carbonate test should be run If effervescence appears then that confirms that the unknown is Na2CO3 If the other test tube contains sulfate then it is H2804 14 If no carbonate is present but one of the tubes contains nitrate then that unknown is HNO3 and the other unknown would have to be NaZSO4
