teach students the lndamentals of cost accounting Although Accounting students are required to enroll in ACC 307 students in all areas of business administration could bene t from this course since costing and pricing considerations are useful for decision making in all aspects of business management including accounting nance marketing CIS human resources and notforpro t operations As an example product costing not only bene ts nancial reporting it also helps managers in their decisions involving inventory management pricing products and services Marketing strategies operational budgeting and control within the organization The major topics of discussion in this course include The Accountant s Role in the Organization An Introduction to Cost Terms and Purposes Job Costing and Relevant Information 908994P N 1 III IV CLASS CONDUCT Our weekly meetings will include lecture on the major chapter topics and review of homework assigned to students Since class time is limited I may have to focus on topics that are more dif cult and demand explanations or clari cations A part of our weekly meeting will be devoted to the presentation of homework assignments by groups of homework this course relies also on groupwork dynamics To apply this approach during the rst week of classes we will form groups of 36 members You may choose your own group members or if necessary I will select them for you Each group will be responsible to present the problems which I will assign to your group Being absent on the day your group presentation is scheduled is not an acceptable excuse to not participate Write the phone number andor email address of your group members If you are absent it is your responsibility to check with your group members to nd out about your group assignments Everyone in the group is responsible to participate in solving and presenting every problem assigned to the group Failure to attend class on the date of your scheduled presentation or if you do not take an active role in the presentation will result in a grade of zero for that presentation All members of the team must demonstrate their preparation in each and every presentation Group Research Project You will also be responsible to work on a research project thatI have assigned to your group see the page titled Group Writing Assignment attached This is a formal writing assignment that must be free of plagiarism prepared in Microsoft Word doublespaced spell grammar checked and written using proper form and style Make sure that all members of the group participate equally in the research preparation and writing of this project The paper will be graded on the basis of originality content and grammar 5amp6 Here are some guidelines for completing your research a Research the following information for your assigned company The names of its founders background history main products or services major events in uencing the company s operations any new products or services what factors impact the cost of the company s products or services the effects of major lawsuits on the company s operations current political and economic events that may affect the company s operations financial performance over the past three to five years short and longterm plans expectations of future performance major competitors etc Also look for similar information about the industry You may find the above information on the following sites Yahoo MSN Google Alta Vista or other Internet sites b Explain whether the company is using job costing or process costing Remember that some companies may use a combination of the two costing systems c Review the advantages and disadvantages of Activity Based Costing in the textbook Explain whether your company will benefit from the use of ABC costing What advantages and disadvantages do you find with the application of ABC costing in this company Describe both the Activity Based Costing and Activity Based Management d Explain the main components of the company s operations Is this a manufacturing merchandising or service company What are the main raw materials used by the company Explain whether your company is a good candidate for standard costing Describe the benefits of standard costing to your company from the standpoint of pricing products or services performance evaluation and financial reporting e Your writing should be original and free from plagiarism If you find useful information in an article or web site and you use it in some form in your paper indicate where you got the information from by formal hard copy of the report is due to me on March 9 2011 the last day of this class with no exceptions Also on the same date an electronic copy should be submitted to a website that will be posted to Blackboard For help with your writing you may want to contact the University Writing Center at 9098695343 Group Research Presentation Your group has been scheduled to present the main findings of this project during the last week of classes Make sure to use some visual aids such as PowerPoint slides video or sound for this presentation All members of the group must contribute and be present for this presentation Examinations Exams are to be taken closedbooks notes and may include a combination of TrueFalse Multiple 4 VI Choice Problems and Essay Questions Exams must be taken at their scheduled times unless arrangements have been made with me prior to the exam dates Such arrangements can only be made under extreme circumstances eg documented medical reasons Failure to take the exams on the scheduled dates will result in a grade of F Note Cell phones and computers must be turned off during the exams USEFULL TIPS 1 Attendance and Participation Attend class regularly and be on time Class attendance and participation are critical for an indepth understanding of accounting concepts Participation includes asking questions to clarify my lecture or to understand how homework is done by students who present them Keep in mind that attendance is not the same as class participation 2 Preparation You should use your group members intellectual resources to prepare responses to the
