Crime Scene Outline A buccal swab is a cotton or other material tipped device used to collect buccal cell samples from inside an ind ividual s mouth particularly the cheek where blood samples cannot be or are not taken or as an alternative method to obtaining a blood sample 1 In parentage testing buccal swab collections are now the standard method of obtaining DNA Finished Sketch a precise rendering of the crime scene usually drawn to scale Physical evidence any object that can establish that a crime has been committed or can link a crime and a victim to its perpretrator Rough Sketch a draft representation of all essential info and measurements at a crime scene Class Characteristics Class characteristics are those which are common to a group such as a particular writing system family grouping foreign language system or professional group StandardsReference Sample physical evidence whose origin is known such as blood or hair from a suspect that can be compared to evidence found a crime scene Substrate Control uncontaminated surface material close to an area where physical evidence has been deposited this sample is used to ensure that the surface on which a sample has been deposited does not interfere with lab tests Chain of Custody a list of all people who came into possession of an item of evidence Comparison comparing the evidence found a crime scene to a pre existing reference sample in a crime lab to see if they are likely to be the same Identfication positively confirming what an item at a crime scene is biological evidence possibly with a pre existing reference sample in a crime lab Individual Characteristics properties of evidence that can be attributed to a common source with a super high degree of certaintybitch Product Rule a multiplying together the frequencies of independantly occuring genetic markers to obtain the overall frequency of occu rence for genetic profile Reconstruction the method used to support a likely sequence of events by observing and evaluating physical evidence in statements made by those involved with the incident
