Intro to Politics Week 7 Notes October 5 2015 Socrates assess the source of information that Crito uses to decide what to do to be a generous courageous loyal friend and thinks it offers no useful advice To be a part of a community you have to restrict your abilities Socrates will not break the law without proof that justice is required but will break public opinion Socrates believes public opinion is not based on knowledge about justice Socrates believes in this because laws might be based on some genuine understanding of good and bad October 7 2015 Crito gets confused by all that Socrates is telling him thus does not understand what he is asking him Laws are used as an intermediary to serve to make knowledge about what is good helpful to ordinary people Disobedience of the law tends to destroy the law Socrates never says anarchy is the greatest evil but claims anarchy is bad because order is necessary for human fulfillment 0No claim is made that the laws do not make mistakes 0 Laws are rules of reason 0 Imperfect laws still benefit people 0 Since Socrates chose to benefit from the law he is obliged to obey October 9 2015 O The laws were introduced because Crito could not understand the abstract meaning of justice as Socrates explains it Socrates could not accept exile because it would harm his quality of life elsewhere Socrates does not argue that the laws are always wise and good Any violation of the laws harm the laws Socrates concludes that disobeying the laws is ALWAYS unjust because it violates a contract and harms people Crito can be as good as the laws lead him to be but no better Value of laws for ordinary people 0 Assumption that there might be knowledge behind laws 0 Bringing in the laws to explain justice to Crito o Argument about the harm of anarchy
