WWII in EUROPE NOTES 129 1922 Obstructionism in the Ruhr Valley 0 Workers stopped working because of the reparations all of their work would go to France and Belgium and because the French reoccupied the Ruhr Valley with imperial troops African 0 Causes a problem for the Weimer Republic o Decides to back the workers continues to pay them but they are not working Causes quothyperin ationquot price increases on an hourly basis government continues to print money until the money printers go on strike 0 November 1923 Munich Beer Hall Putsch next takeover attempt 0 Planned by the new Nazi party led by Hitler Hitler was born in Austria became a Germany citizen 0 Joined the German army in WI and was kept in the army after the demobilization 0 Job was to identify political threats to the Weimar republic and in ltrate their meetings joined the Nazi party because of this 0 Modeled after the march on Rome with Mussolini workers were supposed to join in along the way 0 Munich government told Hitler that they would give him their support but instead they alerted the police who in ltrated the meeting and arrested the leaders 0 Hitler was arrested after turning and running then being shot spoke on trial speeches were printed and spread throughout the country by newspapers publicity for Hitler 0 Was sentenced to jail for 4 years in Landsberg became one of the rst concentration camps where he received gifts from the public and wrote Mejn Kampf Was released after 9 months for good behavior 0 Dawes Plan US sent money to Germany which they funneled to France and Belgium to pay reparations Germany eventually repaid this loan 0 1929 this ends because of the Great Depression and the US no longer has extra money ITALY October 1922 March on Rome brings Fascists to power 0 Italy was disenchanted with the west bc of the peace process 0 Also has internal problems Unemployment increased by troops returning home Partial industrial collapse 0 Economic slump 0 Mussolini o Committed socialist like his father until 1914 0 Then begins to work for a Fascist journal serves in WI sees Fascism as the solution to Italy s problems Corporatism could help economy bc businesses cooperate with the government and aim for full employment standardization of workdays pay etc 0 Results in the destruction of unions differentiation with socialism Order in society and order in the economy through direction from above 0 Universal cooperation with the state Action oriented quick decision making Dedication to empire building differentiation with socialism
