Kristen Cardone Edtc lOOMrs Jinks 4708 Philosophy of Education Life long lea1ning is de ned as the ongoing acquisition of knowledge kills or ideas that learning can and does occur beyond the formal structure of an educational institution and occurs throughout one s lifetime and the process of acquiring knowledge or skills throughout life education training work and general life experiences From preschool to college one earns an education Teachers provide students with important knowledge and skills for everyday life The relevance of teachers and students is based upon teachers providing the knowledge to excel students to his or her occupation Commitment is a term that teachers frequently use in describing themselves towards their students It is a word they use to distinguish those who are caring dedicated to students and who take their job seriously from those who put their own interests first Some teachers see their commitment as part of their professional identity it defines them and their work and they get a lot of enjoyment from this In the relationship between students and teachers it is important for teachers to be aware of and sensitive to student attitudes as they shape motivation and behavior A teacherstudent relationship is important so that the teacher can play a positive role and be encouraging and the student can learn to trust accomplish expectations of the teacher Both encouragement and pushing require the foundation of a good personal relationship between students and teachers Re ective practice is a term often used in education It is a continuous process from a personal perspective by considering critical incidents within your life s experiences Re ective practice involves thoughtfully considering one s own experiences in applying knowledge to practice while being coached by professionals in the discipline It is signi cant for teachers to re ect on their personal teaching to recognize wheat can be improved or handled a different way For example instead of presenting information as a lecture maybe include a fun game to help students remember it This helps students to continuously excel if the teacher is also improving and fixing things Technology is a major part of today and our future and one day everything will be based solely by computers It think technology is definitely a positive factor for teaching and learning A positive example would be power points which help information to be more understandable and in order Another example would be email Email helps teachers and students talk outside of the classroom for any reason question or concern As long as technology is progressing so should it be in the classroom The only technology downfall would be technology can have a glitch or mess up Luckily for the classroom though we can print out our work and save any information or documents Inkka Tate EDTC 100 On October 25 2000 life as I knew it had changed I had given birth to a 61b 13 oz baby girl From that day forward I knew my life was no longer my own but that I had to live for her Everything I would do would be for her She is my motivation to be all that I can be to overcome hard times and to enrich our lives as much as possible As a single parent attending school and working fulltime I will have successfully completed my undergraduate college career within three years This December I will be receiving a Bachelors degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising Between my daughter s gymnastics dance classes tball and school activities I have managed to keep it all together Having a difficult childhood was just one of many obstacles that I would have to overcome By beating the odds I have proved that I can do all things through Christ whom strengthens me In knowing that I certainly have the strength to achieve my goals and anything that I put my mind to Since the day I was born on February 19 1982 in Lake Charles La my parents were never married In fact they had just ended a two year engagement a few months before I was born Therefore I didn t have the chance to get to know my father very well even though I am his only child My father currently resides in San Diego Ca Over the past year he and I have begun to build a relationship that never had a chance to grow My mother lives in Lake Charles La and until the age of seven I was an only child I have one younger sister She is 18 years old and we are very close Unfortunately I can t say the same for my mother I was raised by my mother s brother and my father s sister both of which aren t a couple They are my inspiration my role models and most importantly my parents My Aunt Karen is someone that I strive to resemble She is a woman of god a woman of wisdom and has made many accomplishments that most people strive to achieve Through her strong faith and neverseizing prayers she is overcoming the issues of facing everyday life while her husband is in Iraq My Uncle Danny was and always will be one of the most important people in my life He was the one person other than my aunt whom opinion really mattered It s hard to imagine what life will be like now that he is gone When he passed on July 2 2007 I instantly knew that my life would never be the same because he took a part of me with him But I nd comfort in knowing that everything that I do will be in memory of him Although I have yet to find my special abilities I have a knack for many things I enjoy shopping interior decorating hairstyling and event planning With so many hobbies the one thing that interests me the most is spending time with my daughter I spend every opportunity with her which leaves little or no time for traveling I have never traveled outside of the United States So my experience with other cultures is limited to work and school Hopefully that will all change when Itake my cruise to Jamaica and other islands this coming May with my boyfriend I am positive that this trip will provide a great learning experience for me I am a firm believer that you never stop learning Having knowledge and learning are two things that no one can take away With rapidly advancing technology and the will to understand the sky is the limit in increasing our knowledge We learn something new everyday and should seize every chance to do so whether it s in a classroom the mall or at work I have worked many places and have gained a lot of experience over the past 10 years At Ready Cash Advance I must be organized patient pro cient in using the computer and have the ability to manage time and stress On a typical day I have to answer the phone accept money print contracts acknowledge the customer that just walked in verify correct information and log the transaction within two minutes This is enough evidence of the ability to multitask I also train new managers for the company In doing so I am gaining the experience of teaching and ensuring that they can retain the information to use it for the success of the company Throughout my educational career I have encountered several teachers who have inspired me to become a teacher I attended Barbe Elementary for grades K4 My fth grade teacher Mrs Dufrene at Oak Park Elementary was the most in uential She loved teaching so much it showed daily in the enthusiasm she displayed in the class I attended Oak Park Middle where I was on the cheerleading squad During my High School years I was involved in many extracurricular activities I was a member of Student Council president of the Spanish club secretary of FHA Student of the Month Who who and a member of the dance line In spring 2004 I enrolled at McNeese State University where I have been on the honor roll several times and have been recently added to the National Dean s List My experience in teaching began the day my daughter was born and increases each day Our evenings are spent going over homework and the lessons learned for the day I also tutor my friends and help them get a better understanding of their notes They all agree that preparing for test with me has improved their grade to some degree After graduation I will begin a new journey as I enter graduate school in January to pursue a Masters degree in Elementary Education through the alternate certi cation program I would like to teach grades 35 or Home Economics My preference is to begin a teaching internship while pursuing my certi cation which I hope to have completed within the next two years 2010 I aspire to be a guidance counselor or a principal within the next 7 10 years 20172020 and retire from the education eld within 20 years 2040 After retirement I would like to begin an after school program for schoolaged children where they could receive tutoring for classes help with homework enjoy activities and an afternoon snack I chose teaching because it s where my heart is I believe it to be an honor to contribute and play such a major role in a child s growth and development In considering qualities of a good teacher many come to mind Knowledge of material empathy having a positive outlook love of children the willingness to try new techniques and the ability to create a nurturing environment and they are all important traits that I believe I possess However expecting the best from each student and being a ready listener are some other qualities I will model for my students Being an in uence in their education is very important to me And being able to put some of my experience to use in making a difference in the world will be truly rewarding Ashley Myers October 14 2008 EDTC 100 Philosophy of Education Life long leaming is a choice to take opportunities in a variety of context Being a lifelong learner is essential for educators in order to teach one must know the answers with multiple ways to explain them In today s society the acceleration of technological progress is tough to keep up with but staying up to date enhances your ability to teach and learn Being in the know helps teachers relate to students because students are our youth and unconsciously more updated thus enabling teachers and students to relate Being a committed teacher is one who is involved and knows hisher students This is important in many aspects By being involved with your students it brings a connection of trust respect and understanding Students tend to participate more when they feel accepted and comfortable in their surroundings and you as a teacher set the tone of your class Having a friendly open atmosphere allows the students to express themselves more freely Once a relationship is built with your students they will view classes work and involvement differently simply because they respect you As a teacher being an approachable adult is a monumental tool students need someone they can go to in times of need With experience a teacher grows and learns what works and what does not hisher work principles and tactics will change and adjust to better suit specific needs or situations Keeping records data and mental notes on lessons taught will allow you to review and analyze what needs to be tweaked Help aids and support meetings can bring other innovative ideas to give multiple teaching angles By doing so you improve the lesson so that it is taught and understood allowing students to get maximum benefits Ashley Myers October 14 2008 EDTC 100 Teaching changes every year with newer techniques and methods for every subject Having advanced technology improves our ability to teach and learn by giving us unlimited access to everything worldwide Technology is reason for our vast growth in school curriculum because society today is quick paced and savvy sharp constantly looking for what s next Technology has slowly become a crucial tool in schools and as time passes it will and should continue to be integrated and used On the down side technology does create windows for mischief if proper protections and rules are not enforced There will also be the inevitable malfunction shortage and learning assessment to keep updated In all technology is a tremendous help to education but is not the foundation Haley Pole 102808 EDTC 100 V1 PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION Commitment to life long learning Lifelong learning is a continuous process of learning new things throughout life at all ages Lifelong learning can take place not only through school but through work friends and other activities Lifelong learning is important because if you do not learn new skills everyday you will not be able to adapt to all the changes that take place One of the reasons why lifelong learning has become so important is the increase of technology For example there are many elderly citizens that do not know how to use computers or cell phones Today computers and cell phones are major necessities in everyday life for many It is important that teachers are continually learning new things to teach their students Not only do the students learn new things everyday so do the teachers The students can teach the teachers new things and help them learn from a different perspective Learning something will bene t a student for life because they get to take what they learn and teach others The students have an opportunity to take what they learn from each grade and apply it to future grade s Commitment to the learner I don t think anyone can be an educator if they are not committed to their job and their students Teaching takes patience time dedication and other special talents The significance of a teacher s commitment to his or her students is big on their development I believe it is very important that teachers have a relationship with each and every student The teacher needs to treat each and every student equal and as an individual This helps the student excel if they know their teacher is there for them Spending time with each student and learnng their qualities and strengths will deepen the relationship There might be a student with really low selfesteem about reading but their selfesteem about wildlife may be sky high Haley Pole 102808 EDTC 100 V1 Also the student may not come from a supportive and loving home if they are shown that love and support at school it may help achieve academic success Aptitude for re ection Re ective practitioner is someone who teaches a continuous process that involves the learner considering critical incidents in his or her life s experiences and re ects on everything that they have taught or learned The teacher re ecting on his or her teaching helps determine what works best for the students If the teacher does not get feedback from the student then he or she will not know if they are teaching in a productive matter Using a self regulated process may help for re ection because the student will have time to think what they have learned and have a chance to go back re think and ask questions on what they didn t understand Aptitude for technology integration The role the technology should play in teaching and learning is very important Lifelong learning requires integrating technology I think technology will not only help the students advance but also help them help others There are so many different technological approaches to education Handson learning doesn t need to be taken out of the class room That should always come before technology so that the students aren t dependent on technology Ithink many parents have issues and concerns about using technology in school these days Parents may think that the technology will slow their child s learning because a machine is doing everything for them There are many ethnic backgrounds that do not believe in using technology I think it should be up to the parent on how their child learns and should be given the option whether or not their child is allowed to participate when using technology Also there are financial issues that may arise because the money could be used to improve the facilities of the school instead of buying handheld computers for the students to use Melany LeBleu EDTC 100 E Philosophy of Education April 9 2008 Teaching and learning are things that everyone continues to do throughout life Each day we learn something new then turn around and teach it to someone else Everyone is a teacher but only a percentage of people have the ability to become professional teachers and succeed by molding young uneducated children into strong knowledgeable adults To be a teacher is to have the ability and ambition to provide students with the keys that they need to become lifelong learners There are too many people that believe they are too old to learn new things The concept of lifelong learning is that anyone no matter what age can learn new ideas skills and behaviors This concept is used not only in school and higher education but on the job at home and in leisure activities We all learn new things everyday but it is up to each individual to decide how much he or she wants to learn in the time that s given It is very important for teachers to be lifelong learners also The ideas and technologies of the world change so quickly that teachers need to lea1n them in order to teach them to their students Teachers should be committed to teaching their students not only the subjects required but how to learn and the importance of learning throughout life Teaching is the most important job to have Everyone teaches something to someone else all the time An education teacher though is a very delicate job It is important to keep the job professional yet fun at the same time By displaying professionalism in the classroom the teacher is showing the students where they each stand The teacher should also keep the classroom fun so that the students do not become disinterested It is the teacher s responsibility to make sure that each student is learning and understanding the materials given Teachers can use the re ective practitioner Melany LeBleu EDTC 100 E Philosophy of Education April 9 2008 approach to help aid in this process A re ective practitioner is a teacher who studies his or her methods of teaching and determines what works best for the students By doing this both the teacher and the students will have an easier time teaching and learning the materials Students are relying on the teacher to help them learn and understand materials required as they move on to new chapters in their lives Teachers must be creative and open to new ideas A lot of thought must go into each lesson the child s ability to learn the material and what tools to use in the classroom Some teachers nd that visual aids or interactive tools can make understanding the studies easier and more enjoyable for the students In these cases technology such as television for visualization computers for research and video or board games to encourage thinking can be used Teachers can also use technology for scheduling preparing notes and contact with parents via email There could be a few issues with using technology in the classroom though Students could become dependent on these tools instead of using textbook readings or lectures These are things that must be considered by the teacher in order to provide the best education for each and every student It is critical that everyone considering becoming an early childhood to higher education teacher understands how important teaching is and how they will impact the lives of their students These are times when adolescents are trying to gure out who they are as well as learning the materials required to survive in our everyday society Teachers have an enormous role in molding these students into what he or she will become later in life Becoming a teacher is a privilege and not something that anyone should take lightly Melany LeBleu EDTC 100 E Philosophy of Education April 9 2008 Philosophy of Education By Michael Savoie Barbara Lewis EDTC 100 J October 26 2008 Michael Savoie Barbara Lewis EDTC 100 J October 26 2008 PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION Lifelong learning is having the intelligence to know that you never stop learning As a person reads something that person learns something new In the eld of education it is the same principle Today with all the technology there are new discoveries made daily With the new information that means that previous information is now out of date As you teach your students out of a textbook there is always an updated version available As a teacher it is important to learning that you teach correct information Another way of learning how to teach is to watch another teacher teach a class You will learn new methods to teach you students something Commitment is essential in any relationship As a teacher there is a different type of commitment that you have toward your students Most teachers have bonds to their students that are hard to break This bond may include being relative being there for a neglected child or just helping a child through tough times After a hurricane or natural disaster students can go through many new developmental stages Sometimes it makes the transition easier if they have someone to talk to as they as they go through these stages The importance of a studentteacher relationship is that you have the ability to convey information The students might find it more comfortable to talk to a teacher about some problems then they do with their parents If a teacher is a rude the students and the teacher will have a strained relations ship Yet if the teacher has compassion for the students they will get along better and the students will become more comfortable and express to the teacher their feelings This will help the teacher understand what methods work better Practice makes perfect is what comes to mind when Ithink of re ective practitioner As you teach the material to the students you will nd out what works better with certain students yet does not work with others A kindergarten teacher has to get a group of students to learn words some are able to learn from ash cards other have to write the word repeatedly If the mostly all the students understand how to comprehend the words the teacher can move on and just give a little extra help to the ones that are having trouble As I have ADD it takes me a while to study and learn the information As I went through my disability I have a better understanding on helping a student with ADD Technology has a place in education but not everyone has the same perception Usually technology has a big impact on education A kindergarten teacher has little or no use for a computer but has a use for a television for students to watch DVD s and other material As you get to a higher grade the computer becomes more important In about fourth grade the computer and intemet becomes a necessary tool With the use of the computer there are more risks involved so a lesson should not solely depend on a computer to teach the students Some risks include computer crashes loss of electricity or viruses attacking certain programs and students looking at inappropriate sites Therefore the information that you were going to teach as to be conveyed in a different manner as a lecture or worksheets Joe Richey EDTC 100 E 8 April 2008 Philosophy of Education A commitment to lifelong learning requires dedication and a focus for those who are willing to make sacri ces Lifelong learning to me is de ned as constantly improving on my daily occurrences and situations leaving room for what may lay ahead and having an open mind The importance of lifelong learning in teaching is that the more you teach the more you will learn This might occur from the subject material that is being taught or even through the student s feedback Students learn by asking questions and acquiring that knowledge into their daily lives Teachers can learn from their students by keeping an open mind and developing new ways to teach their material The signi cance of a teacher s commitment to his or her students is essential in both the educational level that the student retains and the development style of the teacher Every teacher has his or her own style and way they like to present their materials The key to the teacher s style is being able to relate to the student s in the class room A teacher shows commitment to his or her students by letting them know he or she cares The importance of a teacherstudent relationship creates a level a trust the student has in the teacher A teacher who goes the extra mile in making the education process a memorable one is truly a gift to the student My interaction with the students Iteach is something I look forward to A re ective practitioner is de ned as someone who takes so much pride in their teaching job that they are constantly seeking ways to improve A re ective practitioner is always professional and brings a sense of energy to the classroom A teacher who truly re ects on his or her teaching is not only looking for innovative ways to improve in the classroom but brings their thoughts and ideas with them after the school day is over When I begin teaching Ithink some of my best ideas will probably come when I am home re ecting on lesson plans for the upcoming day or week A teacher who truly puts everything they have into their job will bene t the student s learning ability by vast amounts Ithink technology should play a huge role in teaching and learning The subject I would like to teach on a high school level is English I would love to see each student have the technological availability of a computer at each desk Not only would it be easier for the students to take notes but it would help them keep the materials they lea1n in class organized From a teaching perspective it would be easy for me to create power point slides so the students could view them on a projector in class I think if the technology is available why not use it Children are growing up much more advanced in technology these days that by the time they get to high school they will most likely know how to type and use a computer I am de nitely all for technology in a classroom for teaching and learning abilities Philosophy of Education Life long learning means quotlearning doesn t start and stop at the threshold of the school entrance Life long learning is as part of life as breathing and eating The survival of society as a whole depends upon education Education is the background of every aspect of life A child learns to become independent how to socialize with peers and adults learns responsibilities towards one s self and towards others and learns to worship from their parents but when a child is school age he or she learns on a broader canvas A more independent environment comes from the school Studentschool interaction holds the person responsible for his or her actions on an individual level which teaches responsibility This is the basis of the student teacher relationship The teacher student relationship is crucial since the teacher is the person who watches over the student from 730am to 330pm Monday through Friday and August through May the average school year The actions of the teacher set an example for the student and the teacher must be always aware of this A teacher must be committed to the students A teacher can make the difference of weather the student wants to learn If the teacher is committed and is willing to go the extra mile to help a student it makes a difference in the success or failure of that student The student has to know the teacher cares whether he or she succeeds If a struggling student comes to the teacher for help after class and the teacher reacts indifferently bothered or agitated what message is the teacher sending to this student Not one of concern for the future of his or her student and the student acknowledges this and becomes less interested in the class Why should he or she learn if even the teacher either does not care or finds him or her hopeless The teacher must show concern for the student s well being and sometimes it goes beyond the classroom The teacher might be the only reliable adult the student has in his or her life Many teachers concerns have helped with detecting child abuse neglect homelessness etc Having a studentteacher relationship means knowing what makes the class interesting keeps the attention of what does and does not work If one class works well with lecture and taking notes doesn t mean the next class will The next class might retain information better visually or hands on or both Trying different methods to find what best teaches the subject makes the difference in whether your students succeed Multisensory teaching is vital Always willing to find new avenues to teach to research new techniques even if it means more work or effort on the teachers part should not be seen as a burden and teaching is not the profession for those who do What works one day might not work the next and retaining what he or she learned is the goal therefore the use of different techniques would accomplish this task since every person is different Today s technology helps with acquiring information improves communication between the teacher and parents and keeps the schools updated with today s world Technology is in everything today whether it pertains to communication economy political clerical industrial stock market etc Schools have to keep up with technology due to the ongoing breakthroughs It is the teachers responsibility to teach the children so that he or she can go out into society and be successful Technology is only getting more important and society more dependent on it The jobs of tomorrow require technology as important as other academic subjects such as English math history etc We must prepare our children for tomorrow Being a teacher is one of the most important jobs You shape minds of tomorrow The future ofthis planet depends upon the minds of our students We must nurture care for guide and appreciate our students while expecting respect in return We must be fair understanding patient and realize that some students are special and need special care without being treated any differently All students deserve our best effort to make their lives successful They are our future they are our hope EDTC 100
