Cycle of Socialization Socialization systematic training of the norms of one39s culture The quotlinequot the one we learn to stand in as children is a way of social order For the process of socialization rewards are given for correct social behavior and sanctions reprimands for incorrect social behavior Rewards Compliments Praise amp approval Acceptance Monetary rewards Favors Deemed quotnormalquot Positive character attributes 0 Inclusion Sanctions o Scorns amp disapproval Ostracized Marginalized Violence SHence Rejection Punishment Stigmatized Rewards are seen as early as kindergarten when we first learn to raise our hands or walk in a straight line and we are ultimately given a quotgood jobquot or even a gold star at times Rewards also span the entirety of one39s life up through college degree and then from then on with such things as one39s career with promotions Sanctions are seen just as widely throughout life but can stay with the person much longer than rewards especially when related to social norms Some sanctions are minimal scolding but others are more scarring like bullying and stigmatization Stigmatization essentially a label or stereotype really hard to shake 0 Ex Criminal record or mental illness Socialization is o Pervasive coming from all sides amp sources ex peers family media school etc o Consistent patterned amp predictable expected Circular selfsupporting reinforcing the norms ourselves o Selfperpetuatingintradependent 0 Individual unconscious and unnamed Socialization isn39t necessarily bad but one shouldn39t believe everything at face value challenge things question them One should also make sure that what they believe actually aligns with what they being socialized to believe Relates to diversity how we have been socialized to certain groups OOOOOOO 0000000 0 Constructed as binaries that are opposite but actually relate Cultural relativism relative to one39s culture What messages have you received about gender Act like a man Act like a woman 0 Role modeling parents siblings etc 0 Ads 0 Showsmovies Women are considered modest submissive nurturing 0 Can39t be angry or aggressive or othenNise considered a btch or crazy 0 These traits are for certain roles in life hence gendered career roles Ex Nurses and teachers Men have to be complete opposite of woman 0 Proudly show anger acceptable 0 Expected not to cry suck it up don39t be a wuss o Suggests that the female is the lesser gender Feminism television 0 When wife is bread winner bashes on husband making him incompetent dumb 0 Not the intention of feminism o Suggests that men and women can39t share power Advertisement cool muscle car for men can essentially give way to something like beautiful women Other someone outside a certain group and their norms Change doesn39t happen with socialized hierarchy Hegemony the story told o The dominant control of a group of people by ideas knowledge and beliefs not necessarily by violent force or coercion but by consent 0 Tacit consent The Danger of a Single Story Told the danger of only one story told compared to all the others untold Not healthy to be in a homogeneous society Tools of hegemony o Connotation what39s implied amp intonation how it39s said o Context where when amp by whom o Imagery symbols amp pics that convey ideas 0 Language select words that have powerful meaning words that serve as code amp words that neutralize 70 of what is said and received is through body language lmprove to think more macro then come back at the end of the quarter to micro again what does this mean to me
