money so maybe a job for filling out puzzles Gazette contests o drank warm beer in service for several years in the Pacific 0 car bought from Germany Volkswagen the Blacks their neighbors hated the TV would never watch it loved socializing Victor s family implies that they don t like their guests Ragle Gumm believed in CONELRAD on TV adapt or perish in W3 11 Blacks brought lasagne cafe expresso Junie and Ragle Civil Defence looking for volunteers 54 Mrs Keitelbein o Junie recommends Ragle o Ragle interested in helping giving classes about instructions for disaster first aid evacuation Walter age 16 move an oak table to the upper floor where the classes will be held 0 during military service he was kept with a person on an island measuring the weather and sending the results to the Navy 10 years ago 33 yrs old 70 o agrees to talk his military experience in uniform o Vic has a psychological experiment yells for employees to run and then pops an airbag employees running in one officer 0 Ragle clever changes lanes quickly building up traffic around him so he can t be reached 94 0 can t find the station turns off street and hides car entering Frank s BBQ and Drinks too much people no cars in the lotlike the bus depot pattern exits again before anyone notices him 0 believes everyone is against him no one to trust I listens to radio as he drives out of lot broken words and static assumes the people are saying that they re trying their best to search for him and might need more experienced people hears mention of Commander Schulmann with headquarters in Geneva 97 in the middle of nowhere begins thinking he s caught in time illusion of motion turns onto an abandoned roadbroken pavement hills potholes loose soil slams into bushes truck half turned over 98 o walks to top of hill finds ranch house rang the bell old technology fireplace typewriter o lady lets him in looks similar to Mrs Keitelbein her son that looks like Walter offers the phone 0 names are similar too Lady called Mrs Kesselman son called Garret into interior design Ragle says he s looking for a friend had a fight with his wife hosts really trusting Mrs Kesselman brings out an old brand whiskey Jack Daniel supposed to be famous but Ragle doesn t recognize it o asks to stay the night finds peace and order there hosts want to say no but relents later on demands truth on his situation though Ragle said he planned to commit suicide but lost his nerves Lady reveals she knows who Ragle is the whole time she had entered the contests in the Gazette too in 1937 though and won all the way to the top 103 0 says sometimes contests are rigged CH 9 0 Black receives telegram of how the officer lost the truck 0 believes people will be dead the next day if Ragle isn t found thousands of lives perhaps depending on Ragle and his contest 105 o Ragle s answers to the cash prize puzzles are saving lives 0 green man soldier o Ragle gets ready for bed but then sees a radio believes is a tool for his pursuers to use to communicate thinks the Kesselmans are spies too 0 assumes he s the center of the universe 0 reason for why the pursuers went to that much trouble creating fake world to pacify him 108 locks hosts in storage closet to search the house hosts believe him crazy says he s forcing everyone against him by believing everyone is against him 110 o finds phonebook in Kentfield now 0 opens closet find hosts gone cut hole into wall to bedroom to back door left house with dog too 0 whole world trained to know him tapes given out of him 0 sees stacks of newspapers dated to 1997 40 years in the future 0 Ragle believes himself in 1959 reads about the fashions paintings medicine sports of current times 0 articles said he was man of the year pics of his family wife 0 city maintenance people in trucks appear on porch to take him away 0 something placed over his face Ragle breathes in the fumes hears men saying not to hurt him CH 10 o Ragle wakes up at home with no memories told he was found at Frank s BBQ continues to solve the puzzles and contests Junie stops by says Black has been hiring directives against Ragle made appointment for divorce in the afternoon wants to be with Ragle instead feels sick the maintenance people outside his house probably spying on him feels reflexive aversion to them but don t remember why only a feeling of hidingfear finding something important that slipped away CH 11 feels let down by Junie can t communicate with her both busy when the other is available didn t want to appear at the Civil Defense meeting anymore since it became clear Junie wouldn t be there but relents when Mrs Keitelbein persists o feels a sense of emptiness devastation and danger when W2 is mentioned 0 ses the world as dead fake the hills are ashes water contaminated barren 124 0 Mrs Keitelbein reading off a paper by the gov t to answer questions about the dangers of the Hydrogen War should it come talks about enemy missiles and antimissiles 0 Walter suggests building an underground factory to keep producing weapons and missiles when the ones on the surface are destroyed I Ragle feels like the factory model is really familiar something on a magazine no was in there had a feeling he had been in those halls and offices 126 o anxiety a transformation of repressed hostility 127 hates Black for some reason 0 believes himself wanting to live in the future since the factory will only exist in the future maybe he s in the future 0 goes to Victor s store Lucky Penny Supermarket o asks to speak with him heads out across the street for the American Cafe but when he sees the city service truck on the side of the road he insists on going back to the store o tells Vic he wasn t beaten but knows that he had almost gotten to the edge and seen things the way they are not how it has been arranged to be seen 129 o Vic says he saw through to what everything is too people on the bus an illusion only scarecrows propped in their seats but a real driver 130 o Ragle believes them living in some other world they can t see the paper slips he has are perhaps of future technology the softdrink fountaindisappeared when he got in contact with them illusion 0 Black meets with Mr Neroni who has been spying on Ragle has record of conversation bw Ragle and Junie o knows the Keitelbeins are the Kesselmans they had appeared suddenly when the whole situation was dreamed up whole world fake world Ragle in is fake he s been brainwashed 0 doesn t know on whose orders the Kesselmans appeared in town for to give the Civil Defense classes 132 o knows Ragle is capable of returning to sanity making plans and carrying them out they might not be able to find him next time 133 0 VIC tells Margo he s going with Ragle in the city truck for a ride and warns her not to tell the Blacks anything about where they are say they are in the store still 134 o Margo thinks Vic is trying to save Ragle because of the whole thing with Junie o Ragle wants Margo to tell Lowery that he found a better contest apparently they had locked the driver Ted in the back of the truck drives out of city onto highways past Frank s BBQ meets a state line agricultural inspection station where trucks are to drive over a scale 0 fake scale since the inspectorjust waves them on without looking fake only meant to look at passenger cars 137 o highways shifted split into 2 roads with 5 lanes each and the ground not of concrete but a material he didn t recognize 0 advertising signs disappeared only similar trucks everywhere have to buy fuel and food uncertain if their money will even work looks into glove compartment and finds maps meal tickets credit cards 0 finds paper reading one happy world with a snake coiled as an S 139 I federal law demands that the sticker be on the car all the time but taken off when the truck enters town 0 driver says Ragle being outside will only bring harm to himself and others gives him a card says he needs to get in contact with someone soon it has to be important if the gov t is willing to build a whole illusion just for Ragle 0 says the tanks will blow them up if the sticker isn t on right 141 o in war right now 0 lets driver out to place on the sticker who says the credit cards are fake haven t existed for nearly 20 years kerosene not diesel anymore is usedrations 0 driver flees truck meets border military dictatorship receives zone border clearance dated April 3rd 1998 0 stops in town no gas stations available heads over to a diner boys in there looked strange spike in hair toga gowns tattooed cheeks filed teeth 144 0 prices didn t make sense 45 67 20 0 boys in the booths making fun of them for wearing neckties o waitress hasn t seen paper money and banknotes in ages gov t luckily still redeems them gives change in plastic wafers 0 the boys knew who he was but didn t care I stops them at an intersection I calls Ragle a lunatic CH 13 o the boys demand money knows the paper money is no longer in use gives them woojy carbon tet a drug books not making sense brought into a room with a lot of boys and girls the ones in suits hair shaved off were girls plays flutes with nose 0 says MP after lunatics gives them doses of cc 0 old woman enters room landlady in charge of apartments asks if they have jobs 0 Vic says he operates a market with fruits and vegetables lady assumes Ragle is the inspector o woman doesn t believe in vegetables radioactivity not safe to eat I son in war for 3 years already I Ragle makes time connection the contest began 3 years ago 154 I reads a song war bw moon and earth bw humans on earth and colonists on moon lunatics civil war I Ragle learns that he s the savior of the planet the puzzles solve the time and place the next missiles will strike at the people on earth places an antimissile unit on the square of the graph he chose keeping people alive I the Keitelbeins has been trying to tell him the Civil Defense classes was just a history of wars to the present 0 the model of 1998 was to remind him 155 o Ragle was a fashion designer of hats in synthetic aluminum business disappeared suddenly said to have committed suicide another missile predictor found 0 Vic all those strange things that happenedthe light cords the people in the market must have been together and done the same jobs only 40 years later Vic must have lived on the plotting out missile strikes 0 Ragle wasn t conditioned got into a dilemma which he solved by withdrawing to a time of tranquillity before the war when he was born in the 50s 168 o Margo isn t related to Vic or Ragle is the wife of Black instead I had 2 children with him 2 daughters ages 4 and 5 married for 6 years I Sammy is Vic and his wife s son I Victor ran a grocery store in Oregon 0 Ragle t existed threat of missile attacks and lack of public support but 3 yrs of war had changed opinions civil war means sacrifice being loyal to what they believe in Ragle agrees to go with the lunatics to leave Earth joins Walter and Mrs Keitelbein besides a transport 0 Victor doesn t follow him will return to the Old Town
