PSY 310 Week 9▯ Chapter 9!▯ Antecedents—Behavior—Consequence (A-B-C)▯ We are going to talk about Antecedent conditions▯ ▯ Stimulus Control— needed so behavior occurs at the right time and place, right frequency and settings. This relates to the antecedents. Example: You would only swear in certain situations such as with your friends at home, but you would not swear in a professional setting or in front of children. You control that. ▯ Stimulus control Deﬁnition: The degree of correlation between a stimulus and a response. ▯ Example: Red light at intersection—there should be a high correlation between seeing that red light and stopping the car. ▯ How do we get stimulus control? stimulus discrimination training: procedure of reinforcing or punishing a response in the presence of an SD and extinguishing that response in the presence of the SO (Delta) ▯ ▯ SD: discriminative stimulus: a stimulus in the presence of which when you engage in a ▯ ▯ behavior, a particular response will be reinforced or punished. predictable consequence.▯ EX: at school and swear, you will probably get punished. ▯ ▯ ▯ SO: S-delta: a stimulus in the presence of which a particular response is not likely to be ▯ ▯ reinforced or punished. Extinction.▯ EX: at home and swear, don’t get reinforced or punished. ▯ ▯ What does it mean to have stimulus control? to understand when and where we can engage in a particular behavior. sometimes called stimulus discrimination because the individual can discriminate what the consequences will be. ▯ ▯ EX: a teacher is an SD for the behavior of raising your hand. A stranger is an SO for the behavior of raising one’s hand because they are likely to just ignore you. ▯ ▯ EX: a lit vending machine is SD for putting money in, increases the behavior of putting in money. A dark machine is the SO for putting money in.. extinction because you don’t get reinforcement or punishment. ▯ ▯ The SO condition for a reinforcement SD is not the punishment contingency, it is the absence of the reinforcer. ▯ Can have SD for punishment as well- the SO condition is the absence of punishment
