A simplistic look at key statistical terms alphabetically Alpha ANOVA Categorical data Chisquare Continuous Correlation coefficient Establishing the probability that significant results of an inferential test may be attributed to chance In essence when you set alpha at 05 you re willing to take a 5 chance of incorrectly rejecting the null hypothesis Analysis of variance a technique for determining the statistical significance of differences among two or more group means Data that differ only in kind not in amount or degree A nonparametric test of statistical significance appropriate when the data are in the form of frequency counts it compares frequencies actually observed with expected frequencies to see if they are significantly different Practically speaking the chisquare tests whether group distributions not group means are significantly different A label often used in statistical packages to describe data that fall along a continuum weight height test scores A decimal number between 00 and i 100 that indicates the degree to which two quantitative variables are related Cronbach s alpha Descriptive statistics Independent variable lnferential statistics Nominal An internal consistency or reliability coefficient for an instrument requiring only one test administration Data that describe measures of central tendency frequency distributions rank order correlations A variable that affects or is presumed to affect the dependent variable under study You ll often hear the independent variable referred to the experimental or treatment variable Some independent variables can be manipulated but others occasionally labeled status cannot gender ethnicity etc What does it mean to run a 2 x 2 study Data analysis techniques for determining how likely it is that results based on a sample or samples are similar to results that would have been obtained for the entire population Refers to groups to which your cases belong male female car manufacturers Some statisticians would argue that intensity scaled data should be treated nominally Nominal data identify group membership Parametric non parametric tests Regression Ttest Parametric a test of significance appropriate when the data represent an interval or ratio scale of measurement and other assumptions have been met Nonparametric a test of significance appropriate when the data represent an ordinal or nominal scale or when assumptions required for parametric tests cannot be met A statistical analysis for discerning relationships between and among variables Given one or more variables regression can predict a related variable and illuminate the nature of the relationship among variables Unpaired Tests the null hypothesis that the means of two groups on a single factor are the same Paired Tests the null hypothesis that the means of one group on two different measures pretest posttest are the same
