Human Anatomy and Physiology ll Notes October 14 2015 Chapter 20 The lymphatic system and Lymphoid Organs and Tissues The lymphatic system returns uids that have leaked from the vascular system back to the blood It consist of 3 parts 1 A meandering network of tube that transports the lymph 2 the uid contained in those vessels 3 cleanse the lymph as it passes through them Lymphoid organs and tissue provide the structural basis of the immune system Plays essential roles in body s Lymph nodes are also part of these system The lymphatic system includes lymphatic vessels lymph and lymph nodes As blood circulates through the body nutrients waste and gases are exchanged between the blood and the interstitial uid Fluid that remains behind in tissue space plus any plasma proteins that escape bloodstream must somehow return to the blood to ensure that there is suf cient blood volume in cardiovascular system This is resolved by the Lymphatic vessels lymphatics Lymphatic vessels elaborate networks of drainage vessels that collect the excess protein containing interstitial uid and return it to the bloodstream Once interstitial uid enters the lymphatic vessels it is called Lymph Distribution and structure of Lymphatic Vessels Lymphatic vessels form a in which lymph ows Lymphatic capillaries Lymphatic capillaries capillaries that weave between the tissue cells and blood capillaries in the loose connective tissues of the body They are absent in bones teeth bone marrow and entire nervous system Where excess uid drains into cerebrospinal uid They are remarkably permeability due to 2 unique structural modi cations 1 instead they formed Minivalves adjacent cells that overlap each other loosely that can easily open he endothelial cells to so that any When uid pressure in the interstitial space is greaterthan the pressure in the lymphatic capillaries the mini valve aps gape open When the pressure is greater inside the lymphatic capillary it forces the endothelial mini valves aps to shut Proteins in the interstitial space are unable to enter blood capillaries but they enter the lymphatic capillaries easily
