101515 Notes for LIS 4000 Week 5 Zach Van Stanley We began class by learning how to create a clean link in a citation The basic formula for this is as follows Delete 0 and biancapenlibduedu and everything after We then broke up into five groups School Libraries Academic Libraries Public Libraries Special Libraries and Digital Libraries to complete the activity as outlined on Canvas This consisted of discussing the role of Ranganathan s ve laws which are 1 Books are for use 2 Every book its reader 3 Every reader his or her book 4 Save the time of the reader U The library is a growing organism We discussed these laws and their reinterpretation and reordering for our type of library We concluded that each of these is important but they have different importances in differing types of libraries Also of note is that although Ranganathan s laws were quite progressive for his time they still can be updated for today Next we began our online discussions Starting this week we are being allotted more time to better encourage discussions The basic points are as follows I Becky Myrold What do you think of an alldigital library How would you design your own library I Jennifer Eltringham What role does advocacy have in libraries How would this take shape I Micah Saxton What do you think of weeding How should librarians approach weeding projects I Manon Merewether How canshould libraries serve homeless populations How does this affect serving other communities Our thoughts to these were generally as follows Libraries need a balance though innovation can be a good thing Libraries should adapt to their population I Librarians can become advocates and it is important for librarian to fight especially for privacy rights and access to information Librarians should also keep their main focus on the users I Weeding is necessary though not always pleasant The cost of not weeding can be great and librarians need to learn how to effectively weed I It is important for librarians to serve all populations as best they can It is important to give attention to underserved populations A balance is needed for service For more information on this discussion see https canvasdueducourses 1 7682 discus sion topic s 106713 module item id287102 For general information message me
