Calvin Prest Edward Sommer Will Lambdin Taylor Bradford December 10 2008 COM 181002 Informative Speech Outline Introduction 1 Attention Catcher Getting involved in College will directly enhance a college students experience II Listener Relevance As we look forward to our college careers enjoyment is one quality we hope to have Becoming involved in athletics social activities and student run organizations can make that happen 111 Speaker Credibility As active members of our college we believe that we enjoy our college experience much more than the average apathetic student IV Thesis Statement We want to actuate our audience to become more involved in their college life in order to enhance their overall college experience MAIN POINTS 1 First Main Point Physically Active Physical activity in college offers you broad benefits such as physical academic and social advantages that if implemented in your daily life will give you an advantage over your peers WILL Introduction I Attention Outcher Despite many studies that show the benefits of physical activity only 35 of 1824 year olds participate in vigorous physical activity according to a study by 3 students at the University of Alabama for their Project Innovate II Listener Relevance Now many of us are looking for that next big advantage we can get in the extra competitive environment of college Our university has offered us a great opportunity to have that advantage with the Johnson Center 111 Speaker Credibility Over the past couple of weeks I have been doing a great deal of research about this subject IV Thesis Satement Physical activity in college offers you broad bene ts such as physical academic and social advantages that if implemented now into your daily routine will give you an advantage over your inactive peers w I First Main Point First lets take a look at the physical bene ts of being physically active in college A Subpoint The physical bene ts are all well known and well researched Some of the wellknown ones are reduced risk of heart disease decreased body fat helps treat chronic diseases such as arthritis and stronger immune system B Subpoint So how does physical tness relate to us When we look for internships or graduate and we are looking for jobs we will want to be the best worker we are capable of According to muzinet University of Duke researchers say the healthier someone is usually they are a more productive worker 11 Second Main Point Lets also look at the academic bene ts offered by being physically active A Subpoint According to a newsletter from sportsmedia org 3 studies presented at the 2001 Society for Neuroscience Conference suggest that regular exercise can improve cognitive brain function and increase levels of substances in the brain responsible for maintaining the health of neurons B Subpoint It goes onto say that the brain indirectly bene ts from increase physical activity because of the increased energy that will help you in your out of class studying 111 Third Main Point Finally lets discuss the social bene ts offered by physical activity such as intramural sports A Subpoint Growing your social network is of growing importance in our society Who you know can always be important in life When playing intramural sports such as basketball and others offered at the Johnson Center you will be exposed to a group you normally would not be These new friends can help you chose a better professor for a class or recommend you to a business they have previously interned or worked for B Subpoint Another social benefit through physical activities such as intramural sports is an increase your public communication When playing you will be forced to communicate I know this has been the case for me and my teammates from high school whom I have discussed this subject with Before high school I was uncomfortable with public speaking but after four years of basketball and directing people on the oor I have grown accustom to public speaking Better communication will help you for interviews for internships interviews for jobs or simply just discussing your class with a professor CONCLUSION I Thesis Restatement As you can see there are just too many advantages of being physically active in college to pass up 11 Main Point Summary Being physically active can help your physical health academics and your social well being III Clincher In our ultra competitive world why not take advantage of the benefits that could be offered to you at the Johnson Center 11 Second Main Point Socially Involved Becoming socially involved in the greek life at a University will not only boost your academics but will allow you to network much easier and enhance the enjoyment you will have over in the course of your college career ARON Introduction 1 Attention Catcher Greek life does not only give you a free in to many of the N V campus parties but also helps its members on many other levels such as the educational level In Fall of 2000 Greek students as a whole had a cumulative GPA of 302 Nongreek students as a whole had a cumulative GPA of 287 Listener Relevance For many of us our goal is to succeed in school but also develop many new friendships and get ready for our future careers Speaker Credibility I have done extensive research to the bene ts of joining sorfrat Ihave also seen rst hand the bene ts to Greek life First Main Point The rst and most important in my opinion is the educational Bene ts a Fquot O The academic portion of your university career is one signi cant determinant in your future success A primary purpose of the fraternity and sorority community is to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members Most all fraternities require there member to maintain a certain GPA in order to remain Active To ensure there member achieve this grade point average they have mandatory study hours and tutoring Nationally speaking just over 50 of students in colleges and universities go on to graduate However Us Department of Education data shows that members of fraternities and sororities graduate at a rate in excess of 70 Fraternities help you meet the challenge of balancing academics while gaining the most from your collegiate experience 2 Main Point 2 Perhaps one of the most favorite Bene ts of Greek life is the instant friendship you gain a When you are invited to join a fraternity you are very carefully picked out during rush week This is so because older members of the fratsor do not want someone to join and not belong so in a sense you are already being surrounded by kids whom you will get along with Fquot Pledges are also required to work social events which look good on applications and also serve as a great way to develop friends outside the fraternity but still within Greek life 3 Main Point 3 Another Great perk with Greek life is Career networking meaning whether it is a summer job or career long choice you can turn to fraternity or sorority alumni for employment or advice a Those alumni can vouch for you knowing that you have been taught superb leadership skills They know this because when you are in a fraternity you are required to do a certain amount of work and to play a certain role within the fratsor An example of other ways a fratemitysor Could help in your career is for Fquot someone like me who wants to do individual and group financial consulting This is so because if another member of fraternities were to own a business they would be expected to allow me to manage there finances Also on the individual level I would receive referrals and business from the individuals Conclusion 1 Thesis Restatement Now after hearing more about fraternities you can see that the benefits behind Greek life are just outstanding 2 Clincher Since college new to most of us and if it is not new you face new challenges every year Why not seize the benefits of Greek life 11 Third Main Point Student Government at Student Run Organizations Getting involved in Student Government and Student Organizations can allow you connections that will be helpful later on and will give you experience on how real world organizations and governments are run CALVIN INTRODUCTION Attention Catcher Student Government make decisions that affect us every day why not take part in the decision making process Listener Relevance We all want to enjoy our college experiences and by participating in student run organizations we can accomplish that Speaker Credibility With the research I have conducted and as a treasure in The UK International Business Club I feel quali ed to talk to audiences about the bene ts of student run organizations Thesis Statement I want to actuate my audience to becoming involved within their college in order to enhance their overall enjoyment w I First Main Point Becoming involved in student government or student run organizations will allow you to meet people who share similar goals and values a Most student run organizations are based all on volunteer basis so the people who participate will want to be there and have a desire to make a difference b According to ASGA the average student government is around 20 people in size ASGA 2008 and this is a very manageable number compared to some huge lecture halls where there can be up to 300 kids in a single room c People who participate in student government will share a similar mindsets and goals If you are looking for a leadership role down the road getting involved in college will allow you to interact with people who will most likely be in leadership roles as well 11 Second Main Point Developing Leadership skills and participating in student government will make you more marketable when it comes time to look for a job a Many of the task you have to complete in student organizations are similar to the ones that many political leaders complete just on a smaller scale The experience will become an advantage when the time comes to make a decision that affects an entire population b Many people who hire for these type of positions look for previous experience in smaller levels of organizations Participating in these organizations will not only provide you more contacts and have more fun in college but will also make you look more appealing when it comes time to interview for a job 111 Third Main Point Student government places you in an atmosphere for success and allows you to surround yourself with people who also want to succeed a Many people in power today have participates in student run organizations including Bill Clinton and Supreme Court Justice John Roberts As the treasurer of UK s International Business Club I feel that becoming a 57 member of a club not only gives me a sense of responsibility but motoviates me to continue working hard at everything I do CONCLUSION Thesis Statement I want to actuate my audience to becoming involved within their college in order to enhance their overall enjoyment Clincher Going out and getting involved in student activities will not only help with academics and overall enjoyment of college but will fully prepare one when they decide to enter into the real world M Thesis Statement We have now gone over several different ways you can get involved and also the way these activities effect your college career They effect your physical health you social standing your academics and your future But most importantly it makes college more fun Clincher So if you have ambitions to make college the best years of your life don t let it y by without getting involved in some way There are many opportunities so go out there and make it happen Works Cited The Daily Pennsylvania 2008 http mediawww dailypennsylvaniancom media
