Polar High - 90 N, 80 N - Snow + Ice N. Subpolar Low - 70 N, 60 N - Storms N. Subtropical High - 35 N, 30 N - Deserts Equatorial Low - 5 N, 5 S - Rainforests S. Subtropical High - 30 N, 35 N - Deserts S. Subpolar Low - 60 N, 70 N - Storms S. Polar High -Snow+Ice - 80 N, 90 N Thermally Induced Equatorial Low N+S Polar Highs Mechanically induced N+S Subtropical High N+S Subpolar Low *Need to know* Warm air always rises. (The warm air comes from the equatorial low) Cold air descends, which causes higher air pressure (The descending air flows towards the equator) In S. Pole ice can be 2 miles thick In the N. Pole the ice is not as thick since the ocean in underneath 3/23/16 Wind The Coriolis Force The deflection that is caused by the Coriolis Force occurs in the right of the path that it is intended to travel in the northern hemisphere, and to the left in the southern hemisphere The strength from the Coriolis Force increases as the latitude increases This force is nonexistent at the equator, but full force at the poles Trade winds These are between N. Subtropical High, Equatorial Low, S. Subtropical High These winds are…. Most extensively and best developed wind system Consistent in both speed and direction Between: N. Subpolar Low, N. Subtropical High, S. Subpolar Low, & S. Subtropical High Are all affected by westerly winds called (Westerlies) Between: Polar High, N. Subpolar Low, S. Polar High, & S. Subpolar Low are all affected by easterly winds (Polar Easterlies) Horse Lats.
