Meghan Wall November 20 2011 Lib Studies 2214 There are various pros to allowing concealed weapons on a college campus Two of them are Campus shooters would be stopped more quickly if students were allowed to carry concealed weapons and Concealedweapons permit holders are ve times less likely to commit violent crimes than aimed individuals without a license The SCCC Students for Concealed Carry on Campus are advocates that college students should be allowed to carry their concealed guns on campus In 1966 at the University of Texas there was a twenty ve year old man who climbed on top of a tower with a sniper ri e This man Joseph Whitman then began to re injuring and killing students The police were unable to stop him due to their lack of advanced re arms shotguns and pistols The students of Texas went into their rooms and were ring their hunting ri es making more progress than the police did at that point Joseph Whitman was nally stopped by death due to a police man who went underground to gain access to the tower This is a great example of how students being able to carry licensed guns on campus can be bene cial to a college campus police and students lives The opposing side of this is that guns on campus would lead to more violence on campus and studies of students with concealed weapons in simulated shootings have shown that they panic rather than taking effective selfdefensive actions These statements are because students would feel more threatened if they knew that people were armed on campus Also people agree that more guns on campus would result in more guns related incidents My opinion on the issue is that people should be allowed to carry a weapon if they have their concealed license I would feel much safer if I knew that there were people who could stop a shooter if that problem ever occurred at UNCC I believe that people who would have their conceal to carry license would not typically be the people to start crimes Also one of the cons was that these people would act out of impulse and not defensively This doesn t really prove anything because they were put in simulated situations In real life you never know how people are going to act you can t predict people under pressure
