Lecture 21: March 23 First function gods=Adityas Aryaman  Assistant to Mitra  Associated with human friendship, marriage Bhaga  Associated with marriage  Principle role: to see to it that society’s goods are rightly divided/distributed among society’s members Avestan  Ancient Iranian language  Cognate to Bhaga = baga ‘god’ Old Church Slavic  Bagu ‘god’ nd 2 function gods= Rudras  Most powerful of warrior gods o Indra o AKA Vrtrahan (used in the Vedas) ‘slayer of dragon’  Vrtra o Dragon o 1 crime—cattle thief nd o 2 crime—brings drought  For these reasons, Indra slays him  Rig Veda 1.32—hymn of the slaying of Vrtra o When Indra slayed him, the cattle were released and the water was no longer held back Indra’s triple sins Sin 1—slays Trisiras o Brahman among the Gods o Worst type of murder Sin 2—Killed Namuci o Violated a treaty with him Sin 3—Commits adultery with Gautama o She is a wife of a Brahman o Brahman turns wife into stone and castrates Indra with a curse Similarities between Indra and Tullus Hostilius Trisiras  Siras ‘head’ –he is a 3 headed figure  He is called “cousin of the gods”  Indra hired a hit man to murder him because he is threatening the order of divine society by threatening to kill Varuna Trita Aptya rd  The 3 Aptya brother o 3 brother kills triple adversary—same motif in PIE o Horatius killed Curiatii—third brother kills triple enemy/family member  Cleansed for the murder of Trisiras just like Horatius was nd Indra and Namuci (2 sin)  Made a peace treaty—no longer enemies o He intoxicates Indra with alcohol—Indra now has lost his physical strength o The only way to get his physical strength back is to kill Namuci—but he cant because he made a non-aggression pact  3 gods come to his rescue: Asvins, Sarasvati o 3 deity functions—2 male 1 female  With a foam of a wave, he decapitates Namuci at dawn o Decapitating consists of ‘churning’ Mettius Fuffiticus—dictator of Alba Longa o Betrays Tullus—former enemy turned ally turns his back on Tullus o Similar to Indra and Namuci o Gods that helped Tullus—Quirinus, Ops, Saturnus (all agricultural gods) Indra= Tullus Hostilius  Dumezil says that the 3 function sin of Tullus has been displaced and moved to Rome o Position of Tarquinius Superbus
