MHIS 146 Name Chapter 14 Topic Figured bass OK here39s the deal with figured bass There39s a bunch of bass notes with numbers underneath or not This is all secret code invented by lazy composers hundreds of years ago And we39re still using itfor theory classnot for anything else really But I digress The code is simple I will now reveal its secrets So we could indicate that We could look at Our base unit it as built with the by putting both numbers is the triad interval of a third and a 5th beneath the bass note 3 And that39s exactly what we do Each number represents an interval above the bass note There are a few other things to know however E A bass note with nothing underneath indicates E a root position triad A 6 underneath indicates a 1st inversion triad The quot3quot is omitted to save time E This indicates a 2nd inversion triad 4amp0 A slash through a number means to E raise the pitch indicated An accidental beneath a number means to alter the third above the bass A dash between numbers means to move that voice part as indicated
