1Ericksonj Lab Project The Effect of Antibacterial Soap on Escherichia coli Notes Slide One soap is a hydrocarbon chain with a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail The soap molecules squeeze in on the surface of the water molecules leaving their hydrophobic tails pointing away from the water molecule The reason why there is a need for soap and water to clean surfaces is because dirt is an oily substance and repels water instead of binding to it soap is a medium for them to bind in a way that removes the dirt from the surface The dirt on the surface of a human is especially oily because of the secretions on the skin Soap is made of combinations of fats oils and lye which is an alkaline The alkaline splits the fats and oils into fatty acids and glycerin and then the sodium of the alkali product joins with the fatty acids forming what we know as soap Slide two E coli are a bacteria that normally live in the intestinal tract and are typically harmless The E coli that are known to cause harm to the body are called pathogenic strains The pathogenic strains are known to cause symptoms such as diarrhea urinary tract infections and even respiratory illnesses E coli can also be very bene cial some scientists can even use them in testing water Theodore Von Escherich discovered the bacteria E coli in 1885 E coli are gram negative rod shaped and have pill for locomotion E coli infections come from contaminated food such as undercooked meat Slide 3 the purpose of this experiment was to prove the effectiveness of anti bacterial soap versus common hand soap The importance of how effective antibacterial soap is could be the difference between someone living and dying Slide 4 If antibacterial soap is used then more bacteria will be effected rather than common hand soap My prediction is that signi cantly more bacteria will be killed when using the antibacterial soap rather than the hand soap Slide 5 supplies Slide 6 7 and 8 Method for experiment Slide 9 10 Results Slide 11 More and more people are becoming conscious of the risk of becoming sick and are taking precautions to prevent illnesses but with tis prevention come adverse side effects Some of the chemicals that are used in the products we use for hygiene are harsh and could even create resistant bacteria The bacteria population that are typically found with human bodies protect them from invasive bacteria and have many good side effects which is why they are necessary The good news is that washing with any soap effectively washes away any sort of bad bacteria strain A lot of the diseases that we try to prevent by washing with antibacterial soap would not even be effected by the soap such as the common cold because it is viral
