Rachel Florek Educ 410 Lesson Plan for Individual Instruction 1 Familiar reading Fantail Fantail by Margaret Mahy The Monkey Bridge by Joy Cowley Mrs WishyWashy by Joy Cowley Ha Ha Giraffe by Caroline Repchuk Previous night s baggie book 2 The child reads a new book K 2 or reads a section of a chapter book 3 6 For today s lesson Jane will read Try It by Susan Green and Sharon Siamon Since the book is an excellent example of using illustrations to decode unfamiliar words I am going to point out particular words that have high support from the corresponding picture For the next picture I will have Jane point out the word that the illustration is representing 3 Running record of student reading new book or 100 words of a section of a chapter book The running record for this lesson is attached 4 Word work or strategy instruction based on running record or observed needs The running record will be fully analyzed after the lesson Jane did very well reading Try It Her only mistake occurred when reading the word worm she read it as warm This shows that she is using Visual clues but still does not consistently rely on meaning or sounding right processing systems Jane read warm then stopped and studied the picture on the page After about 10 seconds of looking at the illustration she corrected the word and moved on in the story 5 Written response to book For Jane s written response I will ask her to write a sentence about another thing that Lucy in the story would try and then whether or not she liked doing the activity The book ends with What will Lucy try now I want lane to nish the story with another action that Lucy tried Analysis 0 For familiar reading Jane read Fantail Fantail She has already read this book a couple of times so it was a practically perfect reading of the story She read with perfect uency her knowledge of sight words was impeccable and she skipped absolutely no words It was quite a successful familiar reading of Fantail Fantail And all of this was done without any support from me 0 Jane did a great job reading the new book Try It Considering this was the rst time she had read this book she did wonderfully I think the picture walk helped Jane read this book as I could see her studying the pictures to help with her unfamiliar words There is a note on her running
