User and Access Services 102915 Week 7 Zach Van Stanley Class began with a guest speaker who spoke with us about outreach She went to a strict Catholic school with very limited library access which created a sense of wonder and strong emotion when she finally gained access to public libraries She obtained a masters in English Education from India and her masters in Library Science and she is nearly done with her PhD Her story centered on discovering the wonder of finding out that public libraries are a free service with unprecedented access Some points to consider from her presentation are as follows Unlike in the past people do not need to go to a specific place to retrieve information o The Jefferson County bookmobile stops at senior locations and halfway houses 0 Empowerment helps both the empowered and the empowerer 0 Volunteering is a good way to gain experience 0 Books are much more of a part of young children s lives in American than in India 0 It is very important to understand other cultures and some cultures may not yet understand libraries 0 Look at the layered impact of outreach Do not assume that a user will take initiative with asking for help We then discussed the details of our final project See the assignment sheet for more information
