Week 10 Notes Friday ctober 3Q 2 15 72m PM 71 O O In a gas particles are so far apart and moving so fast that their attractions are negligible A gas is described by the physical properties of pressure P volume V temperature T and the amount in moles A gas exerts pressure the force of the gas particles striking the walls of a container Gas pressure is measured in units such as tort mmHg tam and Pa The volume V of gas changes inversely with the pressure P of gas if there is no change in the temperature and the amount of gas This means that the pressure increase if the volume decreases pressure decreases if the volume increases The volume V of a gas is directly related to its kelvin temperature T when there is no change in the pressure and amount of the gas Therefore if temperature increases the volume of the gas increases if temperature decreases volume decreases The pressure p of a gas is directly related to its kelvin temperature T This relationship means that an increase in temperature increases the pressure of a gas and a decrease in temperature decreases the pressure as long as the volume and amount of gas remains constant Vapor pressure is the pressure of the gas that forms when a liquid evaporates At the boiling point of a liquid the caper pressure equals the external pressure
