business format DO NOT use casual web style or texting in your postings orI will not grade them I want every I capitalized proper punctuation and spelling I recommend that you do all of your postings on the discussion board in WORD first save them and then cut and paste them onto the discussion board Sometimes Blackboard does funny things and this way you will not lose or have to rewrite your postings Discussions submissions will NOT be graded after the due date No Exceptions Discussions are designed to prompt an interactive conversation and they need to be completed when the whole class is on the topic The course is outlined step by step in the Assignments section I strongly recommend that you print out these pages and keep them handy as a guide to what is due and when Everything is listed in this section so you can use it as a checklist DO NOT leave assignments and discussion postings to the last minute There is a due date for your initial postings and also for your response The water cooler is designed to be a place to ask questions and converse with your classmates Please post any questions about the course assignments or discussions in this forum If you have a question chances are so do many of your classmates and this is the most efficient way for me to respond to you Do NOT post any questions about specific grades to the water cooler It is your responsibility in an online class to have access to a functioning computer If you have computer problems there are computers available in the labs on campus Computer problems ARE NOT a valid excuse for not completing assignments discussionsdebates or quizzes Plagiarism presenting someone else s words or ideas as if they were your own and cheating stealing someone else s work or answers cheapen your education and violate university codes of conduct Play it safe and if you are unsure if something is plagiarism or an act of cheating ask for additional clarification I take plagiarism very seriously All work in this class must be original and created by you If you are referencing information from another source internet article textbook etc you must cite the work I hope it goes without saying but you cannot submit another students work as your own For more information on plagiarism guidelines and how to reference and cite information correctly I have included the following resources httpwww c uh edu ri post or also called quotparent postquot must be between 300 500 words in length The more reading or research that is required the longer the post should be Responses to your classmates39 postings should be a minimum of 50 words in length Please do not use the browse button or attach your assignments via links Not all students can open attachments and it takes me longer to grade the assignment This means all assignments except for the LC group PowerPoint presentation need to be copied and pasted into your thread of the discussion board Attendance Policies This is an internet only course and attendance is measured by time spent online You have total control over when you learn in this class It can be at 200 am in your pajamas but you have to attend to this course If you think about it in terms that if you were in class for 4 hours a week regular 4 unit course you need to spend a minimum of 4 hours a week online Each of your courses at the University requires homework Homework for an online class involves research interviews and other learning activities The rule of thumb for homework is 2 3 hours a week per class hour Therefore you should plan on 4 hours 8 hours homework 12 hours per week The good thing about online learning is that your online hours can be divided up over many days The most critical aspect is reading all the discussion boards so you can communicate with your classmates You are required to work in a learning community on the term project If you only show up once a week you cannot actively participate in your group I strongly recommend that you log onto this class everyday The students that do well in this class are on everyday If you want to earn an A or B you need to log on often An online class requires self discipline No one will be taking roll and you don39t need to show up a specific time You do however need to complete assignments on time and talk to the others in your group discussions in a timely manner Often times it only takes 5 10 minutes to check the discussion board and respond to others In your group At other times it will take much longer time to do the assignments for class Online is not easier it is just more efficient We have the ability to track how much time students are logged on to each specific part of the course I check it frequently If we could do away with grades we would but it has been our experience that you all need them to keep you motivated You must be self motivated Learning will be fun and will not involve lectures oh darn You will be doing research and reading discussion and group projects online presentations and more You will spend time learning about yourself and what makes you tick Communication This class has 45 students Communication is critical in an online course You must communicate online It is not an option but a requirement You each will be assigned to a small learning group This group of 5 are the classmates you will be communicating with throughout the course You must communicate from the beginning of the quarter with your Learning Community LC mates on your own group discussion board by clicking Groups Generally these are assigned during the second week of class More details will be posted for each assignment Just as you would be required to attend class your attending online is logging in frequently Posting to discussion boards communicating with your classmates and small group members has to occur in order to complete the class We realize this is a new style of learning for many of you We are here as your quotGUIDES ON THE SIDEquot rather than a quotSAGE ON A STAGEquot We have designed learning activities for you to discover knowledge about the subjects we are presenting Your job is to participate fully and get the most out of this class Online learning requires discipline on your part The grade you earn will be exactly that You will earn it we don39t give grades Your time is recorded by Blackboard and will be reviewed Internet Access 1 If you are traveling without internet access for more than a week you should drop this class 2 At home if you don39t have access to a computer go to the library computer lab hours of availability are listed on the home page of BlackBoard go to Kinko39s or a friend39 home 3 You should have high speed Internet I do not require a book in this class so you can make your learning experience better by purchasing high speed Internet 4 Let me know if you have a family emergency before you leave Also make sure your learning community mates know you will be gone Course Assignments Class assignments subjectto change Each week there will be discussion boards assignments You will receive points based on the thoroughness of your contributions and the depth of your thinking about the subject The person who writes quotI agree with what everyone else has saidquot will get 0 point out of 10 for that post because they did not demonstrate any thinking and certainly were not thorough Make sure you post your own thoughts Last quarter a student copied other student39s postings and posted them as her own This is cheating and she received zero on those assignments Movie 75 points This assignment is fun in that you will watch a movie related to this class I have a list of movies on the assignment page that you may choose from or you may select a movie of your choice Make sure it relates to Wellness If you are selecting one not on the list ask for approval on the discussion board New Untried Leisure Experience and Report 150 points I want you to try something totally new for you I want you to do some leisure activity you have never done before and write a re ection paper You have to do this activity this quarter and it has to be something you have never done before You need to be descriptive so we can tell you actually participated in the activity You need to share why you choose this activity what leisure need was it meeting what was your reaction to the experience and re ect whether you would do it again why or why not You will be sharing highlights of your experience with class If you include a picture of you doing your activity you will receive extra credit Leisure and Wellness Interviews 150 points Each person will interview three people Specifically one person in each of the three age groups Children 1015 Adults 355039ish and Senior 65 these people cannot be related to you You need to develop a list of questions seven minimum to ask each person These questions should be based on our topics this quarterWellness through Leisure I want you to find out by talking to these people what they perceive leisure to be and what works for them and what doesn39t You have to ask questions differently to the younger kids and sometimes in different languages you need to figure out what is the most appropriate word for leisure I know in China there are several different terms that are similar but not all get the same information You will need to write a summary of your findings from the interviews and what you think the surveys tell you about the members of your familyfriends You will come up with conclusions about leisure across the lifespan and in different cultures Make sure you introduce your interviewees and explain how you know them Include a list of your questions with your final paper and pictures of the people you interview Wellness Action Plan 100 points This is your final project for this class and should be a plan for your life to keep you well and healthy both physically and mentally Each persons will look different but must demonstrate a clear vision of what you want in your life and how you plan to get it I will be giving you many clues and discovery tools in the first three weeks of the course to help you in this process You will know a lot more about yourself by Week Four Weeks Four Nine will show you different subjects you might to want to include in your life39s plan presented by your classmates Evaluation of Each PowerPoint Presentation 30 pt each x 8 presentations 240 Everyone will be evaluating each PowerPoint presentation using the class Rubric and posting it to the appropriate discussion board The teaching objective for this assignment is I know diat you each will be a boss and will be required to evaluate someone in your life This will give you lots of practice in giving authentic respectful feedback Your evaluations must be in depth and speci cally site parts of the PowerPoint Anything that is generic ie can be used to evaluate any PowerPoint you will receive zero points and you will not be able to make it up Each LC evaluation needs to be submitted to both Turn It In and the discussion board Group Self Evaluation 100 points You and each member of your Learning Community must privately give me feedback about how your group functioned in completing your project Working in groups is always challenging and online is no different This is your chance to let us know how it worked This evaluation will be sent via Turn It In on assignment board You need to discuss what each team member did or didn39t do to contribute to the overall project The other students will not see your evaluation Additionally you must rate each LC teammate on a 1 5 scale 5 being the highest PowerPoint Lesson Learning Community Project 800 points each Your small group project will be assigned a topic about wellness and leisure You will research and then teach to the whole class You will present the information you learn in a PowerPoint Presentation Students will be assigned due dates when their projects are due and two will be posted each week When posted all students must read them and evaluate them on the discussion board Disruptive Behavior Disruptive Behavior will not be tolerated
