Music 80C Week 7 Class Notes Kendra McKinley A Santa Cruz native and music major who graduated from UCSC in 2012 with an emphasis on classical guitar Primarily a vocalist who began creating her own music using her voice only aided by a delay pedal with a looping function called the line 6 looping pedaD She likes to write songs about her everyday experiences people she s met and fictional stories Songs of hers that she performed for us in class include Canyon Canon httpswwwyoutubecomwatchvKVFvbk995TQ Chestnut Street which is about the house she lived in on Chestnut Street in Santa Cruz httpswwwyoutubecomwatchvthvlgole Sadie which is about a dog she took for a walk while dogsitting Maya Mae The Lonesome Ghost of Light Spring which is about one of the saddest people Kendra has ever met before a woman she met in Germany httpswwwyoutubecomwatchvQququJgFE Honey which was inspired by an encounter with love and bossa nova httpswwwyoutubecomwatchvthvlIgole Convince Me httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv3PGL6pzvKQ She spoke a lot about Balanced Breakfasts which is a weekly meeting that consists of many musicians over breakfast discussing music the industry shows making connections etc These Balanced Breakfasts occur throughout the nation in large cities where the music scene is dominant Kendra lives in San Francisco so she plays a part in the San Francisco Balanced Breakfasts Styles that Kendra is inspired by include bossa nova Joni Mitchell David Evan Jones Speech Extrapolated Lecture David Evan Jones is in charge of the electronic music minor and he went over all the requirements for the minor you can find that information here He has had an interest in speech throughout his whole musical career Particularly his interest lies in the structure of speech and the structure of music He considers speech as a code which enables memory and vowels as quottimbral unison He focuses on vowels rather than consonants because consonants are only transitions to vowels and vowels are quotsteady state representations In his work he has replaced the work of vocal chords to reproduce vowel sounds to that of different instruments to imitate these vowels with different timbres Fricatives are sounds made by pitch Vocal fry is the hitting together of vocal chords that creates a sound like a creek or a croak and that occurs when people wake up in the morning or are under anxiety His new CD News From Afar consists of different tracks featuring news broadcasts about violent or huge human rights events from around the world transformed into songs Songs of his we listened to in class include Still Life in Wood amp Metal 1990 which has a focus on the imitation of vowels by instruments Yeonpyeong Island News from Afar which is about attacks on Yeonpyeong Island due to tensions between North and South Korea Gezi Park News from Afar which is about protest in Istanbul
